An Englishman: Good Evening: Don't ignore this game just because of the result. Black stripped his own King of all pawn protection in the center of the board in front of White's Queen and both Rooks and yet somehow did not lose.
May-08-22  Gregor Samsa Mendel: Golly, what a wild game. So this is typical for a game from the "Normal Variation" of the French Defense?

perfidious: <GSM>, seeing such lines styled 'normal' has always been good for a laugh.
May-08-22  whiteshark: <B00 Nimzowitsch Defense> (by transposition) would be another classification.
May-08-22  whiteshark: In an earlier game White captured <8.exf6> one move earlier, which still allowed <8...Nxf6>: E Hansen vs Rapport, 2014

The attempt to transfer into the current game with <8...gxf6> fails with: <9.Nh4 h5 10.Ng6! Rh7>,

and White has the choice of either securing the bishop pair with <11.Nxf8> or going for complications with <11.Qd3>.

May-08-22  whiteshark: Btw <Neuronal Fritz> suggests <4...Nb8>. Wouldn't that indicate that Black should make another "wait-and-see move" on his 3rd move?

It's not every day that you see castling as a theoretical novelty.

Apparently, 8.exf6 Nxf6 is more common. White clears the e5-square in order to play Ne5.
