Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-26-22  raymondhow: I got the first two moves, then chose 24.Qxh5 which the engine says is slightly better than the game line. The position is then far from easy, but the puzzle is too easy for a Saturday.
Mar-26-22  Brenin: I chose 22 Nh6+, as the game, but after 22 ... gxh6 like <raymondhow> I preferred 23 Qxh5, since the game continuation 23 Bxh6 allows 23 ... Nxe5 or Rc5 in either order, with threats like 25 ... Qxf2+ 26 Kxf2 Nd3+ and 27 ... Rxh5.

What happened at the end? Black is winning, White having missed a draw by perpetual check with 28 Rh8+ Kxh8 29 Qh5+.

Mar-26-22  BxChess: Why did Black resign?
Mar-26-22  raymondhow: < like <raymondhow> I preferred 23 Qxh5 > actually I played Qxh5 on move 24... now i see it's much better on move 23. Maybe i only get half credit after all..

I found some answers but didn't find 26.♖xh5.
Mar-26-22  Gryz: If white plays 29 Be5 in the final position, then black plays Bb7, and black has a mate in 10.

I think the solution to this problem is to deviate from the game at the 23rd move. White has to play Qxh5, not Bxh6. That gives white a winning advantage (+3.15 according to Houdini). The way white played in the game would lead to a draw (in the final position) or even a loss (if white player Be5).

An Englishman: Good Evening: Black might have lost on time. Also, found the same variation as <Brenin>.
Mar-26-22  yrotciv: Hi Gryz, however the black king can run away if Qh5. Maybe thats why white played Bh6

Mar-26-22  mel gibson: I thought it was a check from the Knight
either on f6 or h6.

Stockfish 14.1 shows that Black is losing after 29. Rh6:

Mar-26-22  watwinc: Black resigned in a won position.
Mar-26-22  stacase: 22.Nh6+ took about two seconds to see.
Mar-26-22  Hercdon: Stockfish sez not 23. This line puts White up about +5. So is this the point, that were supposed to recognize this?

scormus: Something I often have a problem with when eyeing the board, the choice between alternative piece sacs. 22 Bh6 or Nh6+ ? Play both, one after the other?

22 Bh6 would be absolutely crushing after 22 ... gxh6?? (23 Nxh6+ Kh8 24 Qxh5 1-0) But 22 ... hxg4 and W has nothing.

So 22 Nh6+ it is.
22 .... gxh6, and then I thought 23 Qxh5 instead of Bxh6 with the next few moves follwing <mel/SF>

According to SF, after 23 Bxh6? Nxe5, W had one more chance to preserve some sort of advantage with 24 Qh5. 24 Bh7?! gave the chance of a draw. Which W didn't take but didn't need as he lucked out big time. Somehow.

Mar-26-22  alshatranji: "mel gibson: Stockfish 14.1 shows that Black is losing after 29. Rh6"

Funny. The engine here says it is Black who wins in this position. After 29. Rh6, it is -7.16. The initial position at 22 is won for White, but 23. Bh6 was a mistake; according to the engine White should have played 23. Qxh5.

Mar-26-22  alshatranji: 24.Bh7+ is another mistake; White should have played the humble 24.Qxh5. Finally, 28.Qe2 was a crucial error. White should have settled for the perpetual with 28.Rh8+ Kxh8 29.Qh5+ Kg7 30.Qh6+ Kf7 31.Qh5+.

Mar-26-22  AlicesKnight: I looked at 22.Nh6+ and 23.Qxh5 as a likely way in.

Why the need to cancel a video ad before seeing the game?

Mar-26-22  agb2002: A bit too late to attempt a reasonably detailed analysis but the main idea seems to be 22.Nh6+ gxh6 23.Qxh5 Bf8 24.Bxh6 Bxh6 25.Qxh6 threatening 26.Bh7+ and mate in three.
Mar-26-22  Stanco: out of my reach
Mar-26-22  Brenin: <alshatranji>: I agree: I played through <mel gibson>'s Stockfish line starting with 29 Rh6 as far as 33 ... Qc7, and thought that 33 ... Kg8 seemed a better move. Black is up by a R, and White's attack seems to be faltering. Am I missing something? There is certainly something very strange going on here.
