perfidious: White actually had the choice of two plausible-looking candidate moves: 33.Nxg6 and 33.Nxh5. The latter forces acceptance on pain of ruinous material loss at the very least.
Jul-31-23  jrredfield: 33 Nxg6 was obvious from the start. Black can accept or decline the sac.

If Black accepts the sac:
33 Nxg6 f7xg6
34 Rxg6+ Kh7
35 Qf6 Bb5
36 Rh6+ Kg8
37 Rh8#

Black can prolong the agony by refusing the sac: 33 Nxg6 f6
34 Rcxc6 Rxc6
35 Qd5+ Qf7
36 Qxc6 Qxg6
37 Rxf6 Qxf6
38 Qxf6
and White is way ahead.

Jul-31-23  BxChess: I went with 33. Nxg6, which also wins
Jul-31-23  jrredfield: I ran this in Komodo Dragon for several minutes. It shows 33 Nxh5 as mate in 27.
Jul-31-23  Brenin: I think both 33 Nxg6 and 33 Nxh5 win decisively, but the latter looks more forcing. Black can run with 33 ... Kf8 but after 34 Qg7+ Ke7 35 Rcd4, with the threat of 36 Re6+ Kxe6 37 Qf6 mate, he might as well resign.
Jul-31-23  Mayankk: My line was 33 Nxg6 fxg6 34 Rxg6+

A) 34 ... Kh7 35 Qf6 followed by 36 Rh6+ Kg8 37 Rh8#

B) 34 ... Kf7 35 Qf6#

C) 34 ... Kf8 35 Qh8+

C.1) Kf7 36 Rg7+ Ke6 37 Qh6+ followed by loss of Black Queen

C.2) Ke7 36 Rg7+ Kd8 37 Rd4+ Bd7 38 Rxd7+ Qxd7 39 Rxd7+ Kxd7 40 Qxh5 and White is ahead by 4 pawns in a Q vs 2R game. Should be winning.

Harder work than a typical Monday.

Jul-31-23  King.Arthur.Brazil: My line: 33. Nxh5 gxh5 34. Rh6 (has to defend against Qh8#) f6 35. Qxf6 Qg7 36. Rg6 Rc7 37. Rxc6 Ree7 38. Rxc7 Rxc7 39. Qe6+ Kf8 40. Rxg7 Rxg7 41. Qxe4 .
Jul-31-23  mel gibson: Easy today.

Check It Out: Actually, not the easiest Monday. More like a Tuesday.
Jul-31-23  agb2002: White has a knight and a pawn for a bishop.

The weak black castle invites to play 33.Nxh5:

A) 33... gxh5 34.Rh6

A.1) 34... Kf8 35.Qd6+ Kg8 (35... Q(R)e7 36.Rh8+ Kg7 37.Qh6#; 35... Kg7 36.Qf6+ Kf(g)8 37.Rh8#) 36.Qf8 and mate next.

A.2) 34... f6 35.Qxf6 Qg7 (35... Qh7 36.Rxh7 Kxh7 37.Rxc6 wins decisive material) 36.Rg6 Rc7 37.Rxg7+ Rxg7 38.Rxc6 wins decisive material.

B) 33... Kf8 34.Qg7+ Ke7 35.Qf6+ Kf8 36.Nf4 Red8 37.Ng6+ Ke(g)8 38.Qh8#.

Jul-31-23  actinia: 'Very Easy' except stockfish 14+NNUE depth 23 still plays Nxg6 and not Nxh5
Jul-31-23  saturn2: 33.Nxg6 fxg6 34 Rxg6 Kh7 35.Qf6 was my choice. It leads to mate. If 33....f6 33. Qf6 looks crushing.
Jul-31-23  actinia: Stockfish 15.1 depth 30 still chooses Ng6 and I have up waiting.
Jul-31-23  TheaN: I'm actually in the <33.Nxh5> group, given Black has to do something about Qg7#. 33....gxh5 34.Rh6 Kf8 35.Qf6 with Rh8# doesn't work, and <33....Kf8 34.Qg7+ Ke7 35.Rcd4 +-> is the fastest but more moves should win. Bit rough for a Monday though.

Teyss: Couldn't decide between 33.Nxh5 and Rxg6 so I lost on time.

Agreed, a tad hard for a Monday: one needs to see a good continuation after 33...Kf8 and it's not enough to say "Strong position with overwhelming attack." As per the agb2002 index, it's Tuesday-ish, as per my index it's Wednesday-ish.

Jul-31-23  Andrew Chapman: <Couldn't decide between 33.Nxh5 and Rxg6 so I lost on time> Did you mean Nxg6? Rxg6 is a draw with best play apparently.

Teyss: <Andrew Chapman> Thanks for the correction, typo: it's Nxg6 of course, I was focused on the following move 34.Rxg6+.
Jul-31-23  whiteshark: <saturn2: 33.Nxg6 fxg6 34 Rxg6 Kh7 35.Qf6 was my choice.> Me, too. Those two heavy pieces on the 6th are a real power.
Jul-31-23  virginmind: This can't be a Monday puzzle.
Jul-31-23  King.Arthur.Brazil: <Teyss> I was one of several who played 33. Nxh5 and devised the line: gxh5 34. Rh6 f6 35. Qxf6 Qg7 36. Rg6 Re7 37. Rxc6 Rcc7, etc. However, I didn't analyze the other possibility of <33. Nxg6>, when Black capture fails totally: <33. Nxg6 fxg6? 34. Rxg6+> (Kf7 35. Qf6# or Qg7 35. Qxg7#) Rh7 36. Qf6 and then what? 33... Re6? (and similar), 37. Rh6+ Kg8 37. Rh8#. Or 33... f5 34. Qh8+ Kf7 35. Qh7#. I guess Black can answer: 33. Nxg6 with <f6?! 34. Qxf6 Qg7 35. Rcxc6> win a piece and can reach mate with Qh8 later. Other line 34. Rxf6 is also good, Bb5?! 35. Rxc8 Rxc8 36. Rf8+ Rxf8 37. Qh8+ Kf7 38. Qh7+ Kf6 39. Qxb7 Kxg6 40. Qxe4+ Kg7 41. Qe7+ Kg8 42. Qg5+ Kf7 43. Qxh5+. In the last line, the B(c6) is threatened indirectly and seems lost, because of R6 capture leaves the diagonal for the ♕ reach h8 check and mate next. Another line is: 34... Red8 35. Rfxc6 Rxd4 36. Rxc8+ Kg7 37. exd4 Kxg6 38. R4c6+ Kf5 39. Rf8+ Kg4 40. Rg6+ Kxh4 41. Rf4#. So I guess that fishouse is right on place this move as "superior".

Teyss: <King.Arthur.Brazil> Thanks for the precision. It appears 33.Nxh5 is more forcing because Black is almost forced to accept the sac after which 34.Rh6 wins easily (33...f6 34.Nxf6+). On 33.Nxg6 if Black refuses the sac it's more complicated even if winning. FWIW SF gives #16 on 33.Nxh5 and +70.9 at 37 ply on 33.Nxg6.
