Nov-13-18 | | Raul Montanari: I can't understand anymore Caruana's general strategy.
Three points:
1) I know that my opponent is far superior to me in rapid chess, so I can't finish 6-6. I have to push, to try and win.
2) I know that my opponent has a superb technique in endgames, so when I see looming in the horizon an endgame where he has good chance of resist even in inferior position, I do not engage in the battle and I accept the draw immediately.
3) How can I beat my opponent??? |
|
Nov-13-18 | | DWTaylor Sr: To Raul Montanari: I like your logical approach to this match. Personally, I think Caruana is clearly the second best player in the world. I think he crested this past summer with some of his tournament games. All Championship matches have their share of draws. These are not "grandmaster Draws " as some claim. All are hard fought to the end. I agree that Caruana doesn't want to engage in end games with Carlsen. Clearly this is his strength. Should be an interesting finish. If Carlsen hadn't missed the win the first game, we may not being have this conversation . Good post!!! Keep them coming!!! |
|
Nov-13-18 | | Fanques Fair: Caruana has to try at least to obtain positions with more resources and less clear, in this way he´s not going to win one game. |

 | | louispaulsen88888888: Yes. When the best play, you can expect a lot of draws. For example,Alekhine-Capablanca 1927. Alekhine 6 Capa 3 25 draws.
Relax, people,it’s only been 4 games so far. You folks whining about draws are the same ones who complain about World Cup football not having enough goals. If the two sides are very good, a nil-nil score is not uncommon. Nevertheless it does not mean it has been uninteresting. |

Nov-13-18 | | PawnSac: < Richard Taylor: I think 24 games are better in fact even more games with no decider. > When the championship was decided every 3 years 24 games was the standard format. If the title is to be decided every year, then a shorter format is reasonable. BUT.. I personally am not in favor of deciding a drawn match with rapid and blitz games. it's not a blitz championship!
Thats fine for multi-player tourny's like Sinqfield or Biel, etc but the WCC is a classical MATCH and should be decided with classical games. I prefer the win by 2 points method, draws not counting, for settling overtime decisions. < ... The match to be given to the challenger if drawn. > It seems unreasonable to argue for such a decision since technically the challenger did not "beat" the champion. Thus previously the champion retains the title with a drawn result. < Then a rematch in 6 months. > This makes sense for a drawn match of classical games. < But I think Caruana needs to do something "crazy" in one round... > I think that is precisely what Carlsen is waiting for, so he can take advantage of rash play to gain a win. But if Fab continues to play solidly and carefully, and if the match goes to 12 drawn classical games, then he
has proven to be Carlsen's equal AT CLASSICAL GAMES. < ..as going to the play offs is like a lottery and even winning that way means the winner is somehow not valid in my opinion. > I don't think i could go so far as to claim "not valid" but we certainly appear to agree its not the best way to settle draws. < Hence as it stands Carlsen has the advantage. > Carlsen has the double advantage of retaining the title in the event
of a drawn match, AND a very substantial difference in blitz rating;
Carlsen 2939 vs. Caruana 2767 . We all know Fab is not at his best in rapid and especially blitz < But they always have a lot of draws in the World Championship. > of course. this is to be expected at the highest level of play. They are not playing swashbuckling coffee house chess. The aid of computers also filters out many of the incorrect positional assessments that lead to fireworks. Therefore i wish many here would refrain from pointless bantering and complaining over draws. That being said.. It is obvious we all enjoy the double edged tactical slugfests of Shak and MVL, and other players with a courageous Tal-like fighting style. |

 | | offramp: Both these players are 2830+, so if one of them plays two or three substandard moves he will be in real trouble.
Each player has to stay totally focused for every move of the game. That must be very tiring. |
|
Nov-13-18 | | Pedro Fernandez: Hope Caruana does not insist with his Rossolimo next game. |
|
Nov-13-18 | | RookFile: Carlsen seems to believe in the Dragon setup. Here he played it with the white pieces rather than black. |
|
Nov-13-18 | | PJs Studio: Offramp’s got it. To add, if one player wins a game he will face a ferocious opponent willing to take chances for the remainding games, which can be exhausting. Also, if one player loses through stupidity it can shake his will. That’s what the other guy wants. They both want a simple and risk free demoralization process. |
|
Nov-13-18 | | Robyn Hode: <And there are some fools here who want 24 games of this tripe.> Sally, when you can draw one game in 30 with either of these players you may be qualified to call their games tripe. Till then, spare us. |

Nov-13-18 | | optimal play: The Queens came off at move 19 (at Magnus' instigation). They didn't even wait to get to an endgame this time before drawing (presumably also at Magnus' instigation). I don't get it?! |

I have to push, to try and win. > You are judging the effort by the result. This is faulty. Caruana IS pushing, and Carlsen is pushing back! For example: In the first game Caruana played very risky in order to create a passer to gain winning chances. As a result, he was close to losing it. It is better to finish 6-6 than to push too hard and end 5-7. I personally would much rather lose the match in the same manner as Karjakin, than to fear the rapid/blitz tie break and play wildly and lose in the main event. Before you get to the tie break you must first survive the classical match, and that requires your strongest / most accurate play. < 2) I know that my opponent has a superb technique in endgames, so when I see looming in the horizon an endgame where he has good chance of resist even in inferior position, I do not engage in the battle and I accept the draw immediately.> His opponent has superb technique in ALL phases of the game. Also, if he has a good chance to resist, the position is not that inferior! Furthermore, if he has good prospects to resist, he may not offer the draw! < 3) How can I beat my opponent??? > Well, that is the problem now, isn't it? That's what he must figure out, and no doubt has been searching for in the last 6 months! Great players poke and prod and test each other in play, searching for the weaknesses. problem is.. Carlsen has no significant weaknesses, except possibly a lack of fantastic opening prep. He seems to want to squeek through the opening and start his fight later on. Fabi's best chance is deep and precise opening preparation, as Kasparov did in his victorious match against Karpov. Hopefully he did a lot of that over the last many months. |

 | | Sally Simpson: ***
Hi Robyn Hode,
It was tripe. Knights off, Queens Off, shuffle - shuffle and an agreed draw before time control. When the book comes out this will be one of the least played through games (let us hope for the author's sake there are not many more) and I'll write 'tripe' in the heading of it in my copy and never go through it. I don't blame the players, you get games like this on these occasions. My main point was people are wanting 24 game matches and if we go back to that games like this will be more frequent. No complaints about the other three. There is always the ignore button if you want to be spared an opinion. "Sally, when you can draw one game in 30 with either of these players..." That hypothetical situation is unfair age wise. (I'm now well over the hill) and it is also insinuating I'd be happy with a draw. When I was young and hot I was never happy with any draw. ---
In a way I'm glad it happened, they should be even fresher for Thursday's game 5 Fabs last White for two games. This is a critical stage of the match, these next three games will be tasty. *** |
