Jan-23-18  optimuswise: Quite an upset. 2340 player beat almost 2700 Dubov. Nice attack!

  Domdaniel: Great win by Quillan.
Jan-23-18  luzhin: 26.Rd2! is the star move. 27.Rd3 looks as good but then 27...h4 would cut across the winning plan of doubling major pieces on the g-file.
Jan-24-18  ColdSong: Dubov can wonder where he can improve black's game. All White's moves are indeed relentlessly strong according to Stockfick Chessbomb.
Jan-24-18  pawn to QB4: Wow, congratulations Gary. As Simon Webb recommended, go aggressive against a higher rated player. Certainly paid off here.

I thought his entire opening was dubious, but Stockfish (at least at shallow depthts) thought Black was doing OK early. 14....d5 is equal and 15....Qc7 is ok. Dubov's position was very bad after 17....Qb6 (instead 17....b4 18.Ne2 Qb5 and the engine thinks Black is just a little worse). After 18.Qh4 Nf6 19.g4 White's kingside attack was rolling. If instead 18....Bxd4+ 19.Kh1 Nf6(?) 20.Rxd4 Qxd4 21.Be3 Qd3 22.Qxf6 is crushing.

After 21.Nxh5:

I'm really impressed by 22.f5 exf5 23.exf5 Nxf5 24.Qg5 Ne7 25.Rxh5 gxh5 26.Rd2.

Jan-31-18  ughaibu: Keypusher: In your last line, why not 24....Bh6?

Sorry, do you mean the game continuation? White has 25.Qxg6+.

Jan-31-18  ughaibu: <White has 25.Qxg6+>

Oh yes.

Jun-14-19  Cheapo by the Dozen: I stopped fairly quickly after seeing the winning Nd5, and never saw the superior game line.

al wazir: 25. Nd5 was my move.

If 25...Nxd5, then 26. Bxd5 wins the exchange.

If 25...Qd7, then 26. Nxe7+ Qxe7 27. Qxg6 Nf6 (27...Qf6 28. Qxh5) 28. Rg3.

If 25...Rae8, then 26. Rxh5 gxh5 27. Nf6+ Kh8 28. Qxh5+ Nh6 29. Qxh6#.

Jun-14-19  stacase: Black's h5 Knight was unhelpful, so I figured it was 25.Rxh5 the rest didn't play itself.
Jun-14-19  agb2002: White has the bishop pair for a bishop, a knight and a pawn.

White can incorporate the knight into the attack with Nd5 or Bd5. In the case of 25.Nd5:

A) 25... Rfe8 26.Rxh5 gxh5 (26... f6 27.Nxf6#) 27.Nf6+ Kf8 (27... Kh8 28.Qxh5+ Bh6 29.Qxh6#) 28.Nxh5

A.1) 28... Bh8 29.Qh6+ Kg8 30.Rd2, with the threat Rg2+, looks winning.

A.2) 28... Nf5 29.Qxf5 Bxd4+ 30.Rxd4 Re8+ 31.Kf2 Rxc1 32.Rxd6, with bishop and knight for a rook and the threats Rd7, Qf6, etc., seems to win.

B) 25... Rae8 26.Nxe7+ Qxe7 27.Qxg6 Nf6 28.Bh6 wins.

C) 25... Nxd5 26.Bxd5 with the double threat Bxb7 and Qxg6.

D) 25... Nc6 26.Rxh5 gxh5 27.Nf6+ Kh8 28.Qxh5+ Bh6 29.Qxh5#.

E) 25... Nf5 26.Rxh5 wins decisive material.

  al wazir: After 25. Nd5 Nxd5 26. Bxd5 Qd7, black is threatening the ♖ on h3.

Now I don't see anything better than 27. Rdd3 Rc8/Re8. Too bad.

Jun-14-19  agb2002: The direct 25.Rxh5 followed by Rd2 or Re1 is considerably stronger than 25.Nd5.
Jun-14-19  patzer2: My pick was 25. Nd5! +- (+3.75 @ 34 ply, Stockfish 10), which appears to be at least as strong as 25. Rxh5! +- (+3.36 @ 34 ply, Stockfish 10).

P.S.: So where did Black go wrong? Black's game takes a turn for the worse with 17...Qb6? 18. Qh4 ± to +- (+1.56 @ 28 ply, Stockfish 10).

Instead, 17...b4 18. Ne2 Rac8 = (+0.08 @ 32 ply, Stockfish 10) keeps it level.

Jun-14-19  Omlyapawn: Nice attack by White. Keeping the pressure on the pinned pawn and Bishop created quite the traffic jam around the Black King.
Jun-14-19  Nina Myers: Slowly but surely.
Jun-14-19  R4f43l L3 M4550n: Here is a typical Friday puzzle, that is, difficult. Fortunately white position is very prolific, no force moves, despite white King is in bad shape, so no need for rush.

I saw the idea of exchange sacrifice but discard as first move, instead I decided for Knight at d5 and than, depending on Black responces, Rook takes h5.

For exemple, 1.Nd5 Nc6 (or Nf5) 2.Rxh5! But instead 1...Nxd5 2.Bxd5 and than Rad3 with idea of the same exchange sacrifice at h5.

Jun-14-19  Pchief: Black should have exchanged with 14...Nxe3 and only then develop his Q to b6. For otherwise if White's dark B moved away, Black's Ng4 would make no sense and soon be driven back by h2-h3 etc.
Jun-14-19  groog: relentless
Jun-14-19  swclark25: I also went with 25.Nd5
