An Englishman: Good Afternoon: In the Caro-Kann Two Knights Attack, Black has many opportunities to snatch the d4 pawn, as here. Given Liang's excellent form so far in this tournament, it's "Awonder" Black thought he could survive.

HeMateMe: I was once on a lender bender. I had 14 Heinekens and was down $1,000.
Jun-19-23  goodevans: <20.Rde1?!> was an inaccuracy. <20.Re5!> would have been better, e.g. 20...Qb4 21.c3 Qa3 22.Qxg7 Rf8 23.Qxh7 and a check on g6 or h5 would have had Black in lots of trouble.

After 20.Rde1, Black thought that castling, giving up the B, would provide some safety. Obviously not. Best was to leave the K where he was and play <20...Rf8!>.

Now if 21.Qxg7 Rc7 Black has threats of his own as well as a well-organised defence so White has nothing better than to trade off to an endgame with <21.Rxe7+ Qxe7 22.Rxe7+ Kxe7 23.Qxg7+ Rf7>.

That said, I would probably have thought it safer to castle but, then again, I wouldn't have had the audacity to go pawn-grabbing in the first place.

Fusilli: What a tour de force.

It looks like black keeps gobbling the queenside pawns because any attempt at freeing up the DSB looks very risky, but the computer here gives, instead of 14... Qxb2:

14...Be7 15.Be5 Nxe4 16.Rxe4 Qg6 17.Rg4 Qxc2 18.Rgd4

This looks bad for black, especially when trying to visualize it from move 14 and with the board changing so much. Black equalizes with 18...Rd8, but he would have to calculate very precisely to make sure the perpetual resource would work. Maybe he went for 14...Qxc2 because he wanted to win.

18...Rd8 19.Rxd8+ Bxd8 20.Rxd8+ Kxd8 21.Bxg7 Rg8 22.Qb8+ Kd7 23.Qxb7+ Kd6 24.Qxf7 Qb1+ 25.Kh2 Qf5 26.Qxg8 Qf4+ 27.Kg1 Qc1+ 28.Kh2 Qf4+ =
