Oct-16-17  patzer2: For today's Monday puzzle solution, the sham Queen sacrifice 22. Qxg7+ forces 22...Nxg7 which removes Black's guard of the f8 square and allows 23. Rf8#.

P.S.: Black's game takes a turn for the worse with 15...Nd7? allowing 16. Bh6 ± to +- (+1.82 @ 30 depth, Stockfish 8.) Instead, 15...Ra7 16. Bg5 Ng4! 17. Be7 Rxe7 18. Qxe7 Bf6 19. Rxf6 Qxf6 20. Qxf6 Nxf6 = (0.00 @ 35 depth, Stockfish 8) holds it level.

Oct-16-17  saturn2: Why waste the Q? Mate in 2 after BxBg7+.
Im am sure the foolish computers value QxB and NxB differently
Oct-16-17  ndg2: The online tactic trainers would rightfully give zero points for Qe8+, which leads to mate but one move later than Qxg7+
Oct-16-17  clement41: Had the Bc8 been better developed, say on b7, it'd still be mate! And still monday-ish.
Oct-16-17  Autoreparaturwerkbau: <clement41: Had the Bc8 been better developed, say on b7, it'd still be mate! And still monday-ish.>

If Bc8 was on b7, then Ra8 would cover the back-rank and such combo would be impossible. Do you see something i don't?

22. Bxg7+ Nxg7
23. Qf8+ Rxf8
24. Rxf8#

Oct-16-17  claudi: A easy chess problem for a monday
Oct-16-17  Lambda: It's hard to find a sensible-looking continuation of the attack which doesn't mate in two or three.
Oct-16-17  gofer: A <Very Difficult> Monday puzzle.

I really want to play <22 Qxg7+ Nxg7 23 Rf8#> because its a <Monday>, but why give up our queen when we can play <22 Bxg7+ Nxg7 23 Qf8#> ...decisions, decisions.

Very Difficult!

Oct-16-17  leRevenant: eenie meenie miney mo
Oct-16-17  morfishine: More than one solution
Oct-16-17  malt: Going with <22.Q:g7+ >

its traditional for Monday.

Oct-16-17  whiteshark: Blame is on the fianchettoed ♘
Oct-16-17  BOSTER: Move 21. Is nice for puzzle.
Oct-16-17  Autoreparaturwerkbau: <newzild> -blush- ... of course! Thanks.
Oct-16-17  Once: Choices, choices!

There are many ways to give mate in today's position. In human mode, I went for the mate in 3 with 22. Qe8+ Bf8 or Nf8 23. Qxf8+ or Rxf8+ etc.

22. Qxg7+ or 22. Bxg7+ get there one move faster.

Firtling around with Fritzie, he finds the cute variation: 22. Qe8+ Nf7 23. Bxg7! Kxg7 24. Qxf8#

I asked Fritzie to analyse the puzzle position as if it were black to play instead of white (ie white passes the move). Fritzie says it's still a forced mate for white.

A fun Monday - the day to make us feel good about ourselves.

Oct-16-17  kevin86: The queen sacrifice removes both guards of f8 and mate follows.
Oct-16-17  drollere: as Lambda implied, three different moves will lead to mate: Qe8+ (Nf8; Bxg7+, Kxg7; Qxf8#, my mayhem choice), Bxg7+ or Qxg7+.

if that's not a record for the number of different moves that will solve a puzzle, i'd like to see the puzzle that permits four forced solutions.

  Bubo bubo: At least three solutions today: a 2# with either 22.Bxg7+ Nxg7 23.Qf8# or 22.Qxg7 Nxg7 23.Rf8#, and alternatively a 3# starting with 22.Qe8+.

OhioChessFan: Glanced at it for a few seconds, and played Qe8+ in my mind. Right as I hit the game link to see what happened, Bxg7+ popped in my head.
Oct-16-17  BOSTER: But with bishop on b7 and with black to move white can't win.
Oct-16-17  BOSTER: White played the fancy 21.Qf7+ losing the tempo. What is wrong with Qe8+?
Oct-16-17  Whitehat1963: I played Bxg7+. Same result.
Oct-16-17  SpamIAm: <BOSTER>, nothing is wrong with your move 21.Qe8+. But it doesn't win any faster, e.g. 21...Nf8 22.Qf8+ Bf8 23.Rf8# is the same result as the game- mate on move 23. Today there were many roads to Rome, indeed.
Oct-16-17  Cibator: Show-off!
