  Sally Simpson: Hi MissScarlett,

That may be an attitude thing. Black trying to steal the initiative before equalising.

Have no time to do a stats check but would not be surprised if it turns out Anand, compared to the rest has poor Black result table.

But also, he may (I stress may) have a better win ratio with Black than the others.

Some of the lads here are pretty good at stat hunting, need to wait and see.

Mar-25-16  Caissanist: Jinxes are pretty common in top level chess. Carlsen for example, has never been able to do anything except Nepomniachtchi. His first two losses were in junior events, but after he lost again at Tata Steel 2011 Carlsen seems to have basically given up. He hired Nepomniachtchi as one of his seconds, and they have not met in a classical event since.
Mar-25-16  Dirkster: Granted - Anand's position is tenuous, but why did he resign? Can someone show me a clear winning continuation for Naka?
Mar-25-16  John Abraham: Even though I am a devout Anand fan I must admit that he does not deserve to win this tournament after losing three games (vs Karjakin, Caruana, and Nakamura). Anand is playing aggressive but he is just not solid enough that would be required of a world championship challenger. I now hope Caruana wins this event.

HeMateMe: <It is probably for personal pleasure, but the chess hype that a Caruana vs Carlsen match would generate would make it a lot easier to find a game in the bar>

I bet those chuggers at MIT and Cal Tech are sucking down pitchers, watching the Candidates! Probably a few drinking games going on, too--You have to slam a beer every time someone declares 'check', stuff like that. Not for everyone, and not at all bars...

Mar-25-16  consoidamso: GIRI and KARAKIN are good not to fight CARLSEEN CAROUANA have to do many match to CARLSEEN to see his mind perhaps he will tied
Mar-25-16  Caissanist: <Dirkster>: in the final position black will get mated in a few moves after 26..Re6 27.Bd5. Any other black move loses the exchange immediately, with a continuing attack for white.
Mar-25-16  david p: so, anand, what a loser, wins long, loses short. The whole nation rests on his shoulders, says a lot for his nation.
Mar-25-16  ChessValley: <Dirkster> Anand seems to be an early resigner. He can learn a lessons or two from Carlsen in hanging in there and fighting on.
Mar-25-16  harish22: this game boggles me. anand has never known to play like this. he played right into naka's strength.
Mar-25-16  TheFocus: Nakamura is Anand's "difficult opponent."
Mar-25-16  SirRuthless: He does poorly vs. Caruana as well. t must be mainly in the head when you see these bizarre lopsided scores.
Mar-25-16  PhilFeeley: <consoidamso: GIRI and KARAKIN are good not to fight CARLSEEN CAROUANA have to do many match to CARLSEEN to see his mind perhaps he will tied>

Try again. We're patient.

Definitely not a bang-bang-mate kind of position, and I wish Anand had played a little longer.

The Stockfish line on chessbomb was 26....Rg7 27.Rg5! Rxg5 (27....Qxf4 28.Rxg7+) 28.Qxg5+ Kf8 29.Bxb7 Rb8 30.Be4 (threatening, among other things, Bf6 followed by Qg7 g8+) 30....Rc8 31.b5 threatening to post the bishop on c6 and the computer was unable to think of a better move than 31....c6, allowing bxc6 with an overwhelming game for White.

26....f5 27.Rxf5 Qxf4 (27...Bxf5 28.Qxf5 and the Black rook can neither move nor be defended, e.g. 28....Kh7 29.Qxh5+ Rh6 30.Qf7# or 28....Rh6 29.Bd5+) 28.Rxf4 Rd6 29.Bxb7 and again White has an overwhelming game.

26....Re6 27.Bd5 Rae8 (27....Rxe5 28.Qxf7+ Kh8 30.Be4!) 28.Rg5+ Kf8 29.Be5 Qd7 30.Rg8+!! Kxg8 31.Qg5+ Rg6 32.Qxg6+ Kf8 33.Bg7+ Ke7 34.Qf6#.

Mar-25-16  Conrad93: <Anand seems to be an early resigner. He can learn a lessons or two from Carlsen in hanging in there and fighting on.>

Carlsen isn't an idiot. He would resign on move 26.

29. Bg7+ is an easy win, even for a club level player.

Mar-25-16  SirRuthless: Here is the press conference for those interested. Anand didn't have much to say and Nakamura is trying not to rub it in.

Mar-25-16  blue wave: During the game comments on 23.Qc4:

<schachfuchs> What's the meaning of 23.Qc4? Does anyone got this one his list?

<blue wave> [What's the meaning of 23.Qc4?] Yeah, I think he had better moves then 23.Qc4?

<SirRuthless> [blue wave] Qc4 was the best move in the position by far.

<GreenLantern> [blue wave] [What's the meaning of 23.Qc4? Yeah, I think he had better moves then 23.Qc4?] I was wondering this myself. It seems the point of Qc4 is to move Qf4.

*****

Post game analysis of whites 23rd move with Komodo 9.3:

<23.Qc4!> is the sort of move that I would have missed in an OTB game.

I've had a look after the game with Komodo 9.3, and 23.Qc4! is the best move in the position by far! I was mistaken during the game to think that white had any better moves then 23.Qc4! The activation of the Queen via c4 to f4 is quite instructive in the power of piece activation.

Mar-25-16  activechess55: < MissScarlett: Have to check the stats but my impression is that Anand's performance with the Black pieces compared to the White, has markedly worsened over the last 3-4 years, and is probably the worst of any of the elite players.> <WINFINDER MORPHY: For me Anand has lost only because of ambitions, g5?!> I agree with both of you. In fact, Anand has always lost more out of opening rather than during middle game or end-game.
Mar-26-16  pantlko: There is nothing to play. Rook is hanging, bishop at b2 is straing to g7. there is no hope.
