Sep-08-15 | | paavoh: 16.- f5 looked suspect and 19.- Re7 ruined it all. Great finish by van Foreest. |
Dec-23-16 | | razetime: Clean win, and .f5 was my first choice. That one quiet move which leads to complete destruction. |

I didn't get it.
- First thought: 20.Rxe6 with discovered attack on black's queen, and threatening another discovered attack on black's king (e.g. 20...Qxe5 21.Rxe7+ ). But then I noticed that 20...dxe6 gives black discovered protection of the queen, and I'm down a rook. :-( - Second thought: <20.Qxf5 (Pe6 is pinned) Qxd6 21.Qxh7+ Kf8 22.Qf5+!>

The hope here is <22...exf5 23.Rh8#>. Nice, but not forced, as black could play 22...Kg8, and I didn't see how to make progress. (Checking with the computer later, I noticed that white actually is winning, but not by any method within my calculation range.) Those were the best thoughts I had. I didn't see <20.g4!> at all. |

Dec-23-16 | | scholes: what happens when 22.. Kh8 |
Dec-23-16 | | Pseudotsuga: <scholes: what happens when 22.. Kh8>23. Rxh7 and 24. Qh5#. |
Dec-23-16 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: I thought this was remarkably easy for a Friday, but I miscalculated something, because I didn't see the need for the preparatory g4. The core idea is pretty straightforward:
-- Rxe6 is a double attack on rook and queen.
-- The discovered check rules out most defenses. -- Bxe6+ puts Black into a mating net, if we rule out ... Rxe6 due to its ruinous material loss. |
Dec-23-16 | | ASchultz: I rejected g4 as too slow even though I liked the idea of prying open the diagonal and f-file. I actually might have played it in game, though. Eh well. Sometimes I only find the right move because I know it's a puzzle. The Qxf5 line is an interesting win, and the piece shuffling is not too bad in retrospect. |
Dec-23-16 | | gofer: I discarded the immediate <20 Rxe6 dxe6 21 Bxe6+ Kh8 22 Qxf5 g6 23 Qxg6 Rg7> because, though we win 4 pawns for our rook, we really don't look
like winning in the long run. So I decided to play the rook sacrifice instead... <20 Qxf5 Qxd6 21 Rxh7> hoping for <21 ... Rf7> or <21 ... g6>, but I overlooked the far simpler and much more effective <21 ...Qxg6!> click for larger viewWhite has no time for <22 Qh5> due to <22 ... Qe1#>. Nul Point! |
Dec-23-16 | | mel gibson: I didn't see it.
Black played weakly as the computer says
20 g3-g4 score +1.98 depth 19 |
Dec-23-16 | | catlover: No points for me. This puzzle indeed deserved the three star rating. |
Dec-23-16
 | | scormus: nothing for me today. I was blocked by noticing ... Qxe5 a few moves on. Only when I played it through I realised it would be followed by Rh8# |
Dec-23-16 | | WorstPlayerEver: <Pseudotsuga>
Yup. That was the point of 20. g4
Make way for the Queen: 22. Be6+ Kh8 23. Rxh7 Kxh7 24. Qh5+ |

Dec-23-16 | | whiteshark: b♔: forever alone |
Dec-23-16 | | spyron: what about 25...Kd6? What next for white and how does he win, if he wins? |
Dec-23-16 | | spyron: Answer please! |
Dec-23-16 | | WorstPlayerEver: 26. Qf6? *trembling hands* |
Dec-23-16 | | drollere: i didn't see the point of g4. there isn't a white move down to 26 that would be different due to a pawn on f5. the calculation had to be that the clear rank would be needed for Q+R to be fatal. |
Dec-23-16 | | whiteshark: <spyron: what about 25...Kd6?> Try <26.Qf6>. ;) |
Dec-23-16 | | spyron: to worst player ever; 26...Rxh8 |
Dec-23-16
 | | steinitzfan: <spyron> I think 26...Rxh8 is met by Bg8 or Bf7 mate. However, I would need an engine to tell you what happens if Black's king just moved to c6 instead. |
Dec-23-16 | | WorstPlayerEver: 25... Kd6 26. Qf6 Kc6 27. Bd7 |
Dec-23-16
 | | steinitzfan: <WorstPlayerEver> Yep, that seems to do it. I was expecting a complicated king hunt. And if Black takes the bishop, then his queen gets skewered (if I'm not overlooking something better). |
Dec-23-16 | | WorstPlayerEver: <steinitzfan>
Yes, I looked first at 27. Bd5 Kd5 28. Rh5+ but the Black King escapes to c4. While White has sacrified their Bishop for nothing. Then I noticed it wasn't that complicated. |
Dec-23-16 | | varishnakov: I played 20.RxKP PxR 21.BxP+ K-R1 22.QxP
but then I was so sure this was the correct answer that I only looked at the (terrible) defensive move 22...P-N3, which leads to mate after 23.Q-B6+ R-N2 24.RxP+ KxP 25.Q-R4 mate instead 22...P-R3 defends everything and black wins easily |
Dec-23-16 | | SandyJames: Hi guys, I don't know where to post this but I'm posting it here - I have Arena 3.5 and in that I can load lots of engines like Rybka, SOS 5.1, ETC The problem is whenever the machine blunders (it has, twice) it quickly changes sides!!! and then I'm playing the losing side!! Any idea why this happens? Thank you. |
