A remarkable reward of merit. You keep showing it off as you do. Very impressive...

Apr-25-15  SirRuthless: Good game.
Apr-25-15  Ulhumbrus: If 7 Nd5 gains little one alternative is 7 d3.

If 10 Qa4 loses time with the queen for little in return this suggests 10 b3 at once.

Apr-25-15  haydn20: White has a slightly better king and connected pawns so the eval of +.46 may reflect that, while the position may in fact be dead drawn.

SteinitzLives: "Dead drawn" "Losing" and "Winning" as spoken by human annotators, often mean nothing since only playing it out shows the truth. Playing it out, as many top GMs usually do, often to advantage, is no insult to chess truth, in fact it makes the truth.

Engine scores for a position are just a guide, more inaccurate or accurate in some positions than others, but I agree that So was better before the Q's and R's came off, and after MC's 30th.

That goes for non-human annotators as well

Apr-25-15  beenthere240: I don't think that Carlsen missed Ba3, winning the exchange. That was the logical culmination of his previous moves. I think he just saw that ...Bc6 led to an easier and faster draw. Did anyone see the post game conference?

Carlsen said that the position after winning the exchange was drawn. I think he was trying to give So the opportunity to make a mistake, but So did not cooperate.

I wouldn't say that. The final result reflects the quality of play since the evaluation of a position as "Dead drawn", "Losing", and "Winning" was made. At any playing level mistakes are made, occasionally turning a "Winning" position into one that is "Dead drawn" or even "Losing". So those assessments should be taken as the annotators' opinion of the most likely outcome, but not necessarily the "truth" as reflected in the actual final outcome.

Apr-25-15  MagnusVerMagnus: If MC says it was a draw then who are any of us to argue? Please...
Apr-25-15  gokusano: You are right MVM.
Apr-25-15  MagnusVerMagnus: < gokusano: > Thank you...I have been watching MCs' games since he lost that great knockout match vs Aronian. Speelman in that match criticized MCs endgame ability and was shown to be a fool. And all the games since then when everyone states that its drawn and MC wins most of them. I would like to see these fish watch the game w/o an engine and go to the PC and tell MC that he missed..yadda yadda yadda and then get B-slapped into the hallway by the laughter of real players who you NEVER see criticizing MCs' amazing ability
Apr-26-15  visayanbraindoctor: 10. Qa4 looks as if it unnecessarily exposes the white Queen to a tempo-gaining attack by Black later on. Carlsen reacts vigorously with 10.. a5 and 11.. b5. From then on, I think Black had equalized.

Instead of Ba3, Carlsen suddenly simplifies with 28... Bb6. It seems that Carlsen did not fancy his chances of winning after 28... Ba3 29. Rxb3 Bxb3 30. Qxb3. White has a solid hold on the center, no weaknesses, and two active bishops, and a potential for pushing up his Kingside pawns in case Black isn't careful. These positional considerations and the tournament scoreboard might have played a part in the World Champion's decision to turn it into a quick draw.

While being under constant positional pressure, So did not panic and kept on making reasonably good moves. He must have known that Black had a way to win the exchange but So may have played for this line knowing it was his best chance. Good positional judgment IMO.

Apr-26-15  beenthere240: I imagine this kind of position arises in Benko gambits where black wins the exchange but without his black bishop, he can't make headway. In that case Carlsen would want to go that route.
Apr-28-15  Tiggler: Very high quality game with original ideas from both sides.
Apr-28-15  1d410: <MagnusVerMagnus:real players who you NEVER see criticizing MCs' amazing ability> +1

<dernier loup de T> This was a marker post to commemorate the Great Banishment of May 2015 where the Good People stood strong in our life-or-death struggle against the Bad People.

We must keep this site safe for juniors and students!
