Phony Benoni: The continuation of this game after <58...b4> is uncertain: click for larger view"New York Daily Tribune", 9/29/1894 (http://www.chessarch.com/excavation... with notes by Albin), gives White's next two moves as <59.Kt-Q4> and <60.Kt-Q4> (59.Nd4 and 60.Nd4). Olimpiu G. Urcan, in his book "Adolf Albin in America", p.202-203, cites the Tribune as his source and interprets the moves to be <59.Ne4> and <60.Nd2> (59.Kt-K4 and 60.Kt-Q2). "New York Sun", 9/29/1894 (http://www.chessarch.com/excavation... with notes by Albin) gives <59.Kt-Q4> and <60.Kt-B3ch> (59.Kd4 and 60.Nc3+). "New York Recorder, 10/14/1894 (http://www.chessarch.com/excavation..., with notes possibly by Showalter, gives <59.N-Q5> and <60.N-B3ch> (59.Nd5 and 60.Nc3+). Quality-wise, there is little difference between the possible sequences. I have elected to submit the version from the "Recorder" in the full knowledge that the paper was not always completely reliable in reporting the scores from this match. In this case, those moves just make a bit more sense to me. I am also going to submit Urcan's version as an alternate game score. |
