CVT #116:

<CREATING AN OPEN FILE Before you can seize an open file you will often have to create it. For example, Pruissers-Reinderman, Dutch Championship 2013, saw Black successfully opening the g-file; his rook was able to penetrate on g1. (See CVT 61 for g7–g5 breaks in general.) Here it is the h-file that will be opened to set up an imaginative attack against the exposed white king. 31...h5 32.f3 Making the knight on h2 look awkward, but 32.gxh5+ ¢xh5 is also fine for Black. 32...¦h8 33.£b3 hxg4 34.hxg4 ¤d5 35.¤c4 £c7 36.£c2 ¢f7 37.¦g2 Choosing a passive strategy. In combination with the next move, a very neat idea. 40.cxd4 e4! 40...¦h1+ 41.¢f2 e4 also seemed possible, but after 42.¤e5+ ¥xe5 43.dxe5 e3+ 44.¤xe3 fxe3+ 45.¥xe3 White more or less seems to hold. 41.¦h2 ¥xd4+ 42.¢h1 e3 Here the incredibly cool-headed 42...exf3 would have decided the game! (See PGN.) 43.¦xh3 ¦xh3+ 44.¢g2 ¦h4 The pawn on e3 greatly restricts the activity of the white minor pieces and Black's h-file remains a big danger for the white king. Consequently Black has sufficient compensation; White did not withstand the pressure for too long>
