Stockfish 17 sacs the Queen and says:
34. Rxe6
(34. Rxe6 (1.Rxe6 Qxe6 2.Rxe6 fxe6 3.Qf6+ Ke8 4.Qxe6+ Kd8
5.Qxg8+ Kc7 6.Qxh7+ Kb6 7.Qxg6+ Kb7 8.h7 b4 9.Qg8 Rb8 10.Qxb8+ Kxb8 11.h8Q+

18.Qgc8+ Ka5 19.Qb4+) +M19/78 793)
White wins _ mate in 19.
If I force SF to take with the pawn - the game line: 34. .. fxe6
35. Qf6+ (35. Qf6+ (1.Qf6+ Ke8 2.Rxe6+ Qxe6 3.Qxe6+ Kd8 4.Qxg8+ Kc7 5.Qxh7+ Kd6 6.Qxg6+ Kd7 7.Qf5+ Kc7

 | | PawnSac: This problem seems to be Tuesday level. I was expecting Sunday difficulty, but it's an obvious annihilation of defense. So I'm wondering is the Bonus Puzzle supposed to be a random difficulty? or 1 day harder? anyway.. After 34.Rxe6 whether or not black plays Qxe6 it still ends up the same. 2 rooks for the Q and black will also drop one of his rooks and it's Miller time! |

 | | Teyss: Hi PawnSac,
Yes the bonus puzzle level is generally not correlated to the day. IMHO it's good, it's a change from the standard one and adds an element of surprise and challenge.Here I agree it's Tuesday-ish if Blacks accepts the sac as in the game or with 34...Qxe6 as per mel gibson's first line. It's Wednesday-ish if <she ;)> declines it: you have to find 35.Qf6 followed by Re7. |

Sep-16-24 | | King.Arthur.Brazil: The king saw the first try as: 34. Rxe6 fxe6 35. Qf6+ Ke8 36. Rxe6+ Kd7 37. Qe7# (pretty obvious). If B gives the ♕: Qxe6 37. Qxe6+ Kf8 38. Qxc8+ or worst Kd8 38. Qxh8+ with ♕ x ♖ end-game. But, even Qxe6 35. Rxe6 fxe6 36. Qf6+ Ke8 37. Qxe6+ returns to the previous lines where one ♖ is captured |

But with each addition to the site, if it's not fully automated it must be maintained, increasing the work load for somebody.. so whoever that is.. <thank you CG> The effort is appreciated. |

Sep-16-24 | | TheaN: Did this today as I felt like doing another puzzle. After <34.Rxe6> there's not much Black can do. Taking is futile: <34....fxe6 35.Qf6+ Ke8 36.Rxe6+ Qxe6 (Kd7 37.Qe7#) 37.Qxe6+ Kd8 38.Qxg8+ Kc7 39.Qxh7 +->. 34....Qxe6 follows the game line by transposition. If Black declines, White threatens Qe7# and Rxc6, so 34....Qd7 35.Qf6 +- and Re7 will follow, Black's Rg8 rook can't participate and Black is essentially a rook down with a trapped king. |

But with each addition to the site, if it's not fully automated it must be maintained, increasing the work load for somebody.. so whoever that is.. <thank you CG> The effort is appreciated.> Indeed. It's a lot of work to keep finding interesting combinations from games that maybe people haven't all studied over and over. After 34. Rxe6, taking with the pawn or the queen leads to the same result. White ends up with the queen forking king and both rooks and will win one of the rooks, with an easily won endgame to follow. If Black doesn't take the rook, then they have to move the queen, but they also must guard against 35. Qe7#. So 34 ... Qd7 35. Re7 Qd6
(35 ... Qc6 36. Rxf7+ Kxf7 37. Qe7#, 35 ... Qd8 36. Qf6 and 37. Qxf7# or 36 ... Qxe7 37. Qxe7#), 36. R1e6! and now Black can either get mated with say, 36 ... Qb8? 37. Rxf7+ Kxf7 38. Qf6#, or 36 ... fxe6?? 37. Qf6# or can transpose into the main line with 36 ... Qxe6 37. Rxe6 fxe6 38. Qf6+ Ke8 39. Qxe6+ etc. |
