HeMateMe: Maybe Naka knew that Magnus would be on the war path after the bungle v. Pons-Vello the other day, and decided to play the somewhat drawish QGD.

You don't want to mess with a Norse god. The last time that happened, Thor got banished to earth.

Good thing they didn't play on Thursday.

I just don't think Magnus is playing well and Nakamura has been somewhat cautious imho, his play looks less distinct than in times past but more mature too.

I also think Carlsen just hasn't reached the Kasparov ability to dominate the rest of the world standing head and shoulders above the competition, he is amongst the group at the top but it's crowded.

HeMateMe: What is the above significance of Thursday? Some sort of holiday in Norway?
Oct-01-11  GaeBulg: Thursday = Thor's Day
Oct-01-11  WiseWizard: So Nakamura eliminated one of his weaknesses and is playing solidly now. Which ones remain?

Oct-01-11  Rook e2: Is it just me, or are 1.d4 openings far more boring then 1.e4?

Oct-01-11  Everett:    <GaeBulg: Thursday = Thor's Day>

Correct. Wednesday is Wotan's (Odin's) Day. Friday = Frigg's Day, Saturday is from the Roman mythology, etc...

HeMateMe: What day does Loki, God of mischief get, if any?
Oct-02-11  Everett: <HeMateMe> I don't think he got any in our current calendar, but his trickster spirit lives on in the play of Bronstein, Morozevich and the like.

Here is a resource on the meaning of the days:
