Jun-24-11  puzzlepatzer: white is in zugwang in the final position. there is no way to defend the f2 pawn, the king is trapped, and the bishop is running low on safe squares.here is a sample variation: 38. Rg3 Rxf2 39. Qg1 g6 40.
h4 b5 41. Bb3 Qb2 42. Bd1 Qd2 43. Rg5 Nh3 44. Rxg6+ Kh7 45. Rg7+ Kh6 0-1

Jun-24-11  fischer2009: Fabiano Caruana shows his class!!I doubt if his play refutes this archangelsk line where black takes on b5.Nh3 brilliant.
Jun-25-11  wordfunph: “It was a normal game. We played a Spanish opening and this variation was played long ago, I think by Shirov. I equalized and had no problems. Till a certain point it was equal and she had chances to draw. But she got over-ambitious at some point and I saw that I was much better.”

Jun-25-11  sevenseaman: Fabiano got a gift.
Jun-27-11  hedgeh0g: I wish people would stop liberally using the word "zugzwang" to describe any lost position...
Jul-03-11  qqdos: <"zugzwang"> It looks as though any move by White in the final position will lose a piece or that vital f2-pawn. None of the White pawns can move nor can the WK; any move by the 3 remaining pieces would be futile. Is this not precisely what zugzwang is intended to cover, as opposed to just a lost position? 17.Bxf4? was the losing mistake conceding control of the Black squares.

No. Zugswang, strictly speaking, is when you lose because (and only because) you have to move. Here White is lost whether she has to move or not. She can’t defend f2.
