35. Ka2 is simply fatuous, as Black gets to mate in two by 35. ... Nxc3+; 36. Ka3, Rb3#. |

If 22 … Kd6, walking into a pin, was too scary, why not 22 … e4? |

The sacrifice can't be declined because 35. ♔a3 runs into Anastasia's mate: 35... ♖b3+ 36. ♔a2 ♘xc3+ 37. ♔a1 ♖b1#
35. ♔a2 gets there one move sooner:
35... ♘xc3+ 36. ♔a3 ♖b3#
So after 35. ♔xb1+, ♘xc3+ forks the king and the rook. Black picks up a pawn and a simplifies into a winning endgame with a large material advantage (and now I'm going to play through this game to see how black ended up with so many pawns). |

The speculative attack launched at the beginning led to a series of passive exchanges white could ill afford and then white missed his best drawing chances. Honestly, what was the point of 13. ♕xd8+? If you've sacced that much material just to bring another queen into the game, you should hang onto it with ♕xg7. I don't think Pettersson spotted that after 13... ♙dxc3 14. ♕xg4 ♙cxb2 that he had the zwischenzug 15. ♕a4+. 15. ♖b1? would have been a blunder, because of ♕a5+, but after ♕a4+ that resource doesn't exist anymore. The last chance white had to make a fight of it was probably move 23, when the straightforward ♘xe5, breaking up the strong pawn center, was the best move. I'm thinking he was probably worried about ♔d6, but missed the fact that ♘c4+ evades the threat with tempo because the d-pawn would be pinned. The only way black could capture the knight would be with ♖xc4, which would lose the exchange because after ♗xc4 the d-pawn would still be pinned and couldn't capture back. |

Well what did you expect from a wood pusher like me? But when there was nothing else, after a few seconds of casting about, further examination said yes the Knight forks and will gobble up the remaining pawns. So that must be it. |
