Jun-18-17  whiteshark: <I wonder which position Barczay was talking about here?>

[QUOTE]

Ίhe Hungarian player [Laszlo Barczay] was kind enough to share his memories of Tal: "I played him twice; the second game was in Tallinn in 1981.

He saw things on the board faster than anybody else. He did not calculate like a machine, but he captured the essence of the position."

Barczay told me a story about a game of his against Petursson. In a complicated position, Barczay saw the possibility for a tactical combination. He calculated it for a long time, but evenrually rejected it after realizing it did not quite work. During Barczay's long think, he noticed that Tal passed by the table and looked at the position for a short while.

When Barczay saw Tal later in the evening, he was amazed when Tal told him that the combination did not work, and proceeded to remember all of the supporting variations along with correct evaluations."

Jun-18-17  Retireborn: <whiteshark> Possibly 26...Rc3, going by Barczay's notes in Informator. He analyzes 27.Nb5 as good for White, although just 27.Bxd3 also seems strong.
Jun-18-17  whiteshark: Thanks <Reireborn>! In my erroneous assumption I didn't look beyond move 16.

Neither <15...Qh4?> does work due to 16.hxg4 Qxh1 gxf5 nor

<16...Nd3+ 17.Bxd3 exd3 18.0-0 Qg5 19.f4>

but <16...g6> with the idea 17. Ncxe4 Bg7 looks strong.

= = =

<Barczay's notes in Informator> Which one, please? Are they "Hübneresque"?

I've never owned an informator, but a good friend of mine has a collection.

Jun-18-17  whiteshark: <38.Rf5!!>

Jun-18-17  Retireborn: It's game 66 in Informator 32. The notes aren't terribly extensive, although Barczay does look at several alternatives for Black on move 26.

He doesn't mention your 16...g6 (which indeed looks strong) but gives 16...Qh4!? It seems this fails to 17.Ncxe4 though, so this may be the alternative variation that Tal talked about.

Jun-18-17  whiteshark: <Retireborn> Thanks again! :)
