  chancho: Ye Olde opening repertoire.
Oct-14-10  SCUBA diver: I think this is a win for white. The King holds the black pawn and the Queen pushes the white pawns.

Domdaniel: <Niels> - < increasing diminishing (doh) space> No worries. There's an official EU policy of 'differentiated integration' - which I think will multiply divisions.

"Diminished but not finished"

Oct-14-10  achieve: <This suggests that White may have winning chances if he plays for zugzwang.> Exactly a pointe - thats what I meant with something's gotta give... Fascinating endgame...
Oct-14-10  Ulhumbrus: Consider the following argument. With Black's K on g8, the Black N on f8, White's King on d3, White's f5 pawn on f6, White's Q on h6, and White's f3 pawn on f5, Black's Rook is tied up. It can neither leave the seventh rank as it has to defend the mate on g7, and it cannot leave the d file as it has to defend the d pawn.

In that case Black's K or Black's N has to move. Where can the N go? The f5 pawn keeps it out of e6 and on 1...Nh7 2 Qg6+ Kf8 3 h5 Black is in zugzwang.

This suggests that White may have winning chances if he plays for zugzwang.

Oct-14-10  Marmot PFL: Black can resign. No way to stop the pawns and also save his king.

chancho: This is all a matter of technique as has been written ad nauseam.
Oct-14-10  achieve: <There's an official EU policy of 'differentiated integration' -> show-off! - heh - but you're right, Friso of Orange will see to that, aided by his little brother Constant-ijn
Oct-14-10  e4ia: < predict 1-0 by move 62! (max!)>

My original post at move 28-30!

Oct-14-10  Ulhumbrus: If White plays f4, and advances the f5 pawn to f7 and exchanges it for the d3 pawn, can Black's R and N hold off White's Q and two pawns? White may have a technical win by zugzwang.

Domdaniel: Friso is the reigning *soldaat van oranje*, ja?
Oct-14-10  e4ia: I just won a signed copy of Shirov's new book...

Oct-14-10  dakgootje: computere evals don't say that much - in the case that Shirov would be able to make a fortress, they'd show white as winning as well. Perhaps this is not a fortress-able position though.
Oct-14-10  whiteshark: + 89.26 now
Oct-14-10  e4ia: The FIDE arbit has stepped in an awarded a 1-0 due to "insufficient survival chances"... and also to save the DGT board from ruin as Magnus was about to throw a large glass of water @ Shirov
Oct-14-10  Eyal: 64...Kh7 was the only defence against Qg7+, but it doesn't stop White for long.
Oct-14-10  dakgootje: wrong timing for my previous comment it seems :D

Oct-14-10  dakgootje: A shame for my chessbucks-situation.
Oct-14-10  uscfratingmybyear: Damn, I wanted to see black's move after 66.Qh5.

Domdaniel: And that's it. 65.f5 creates an odd kind of zugzwang, as 65...Kh8 loses to Qg7+
Oct-14-10  lost in space: wow, what a comeback
Oct-14-10  marcwordsmith: Question: Would this have been a draw if White did not have a second f pawn??
