Jan-26-10  bernieno: Ivanchuk has thought for a long time now. It might be smart, but it can also mean that he doesn't feel comfortable in this type of position. Shirov probably likes the position, and that can be the deciding factor in the game. I doubt very much that both players will find all the right moves in this position.
Jan-26-10  AdrianP: <Eyal: If White is going to take on b2, doing it with Rb1 seems to allow Black a draw after 23.Rbxb2 Rxc6 24.Qxc6 Ng3+(!) 25.hxg3 Qxg5 26.Rb1 (defending against the mate threat of Qc1+ Kh2 Qh6#) 26...Qh5+ 27.Rh2 Qxf3+ 28.Rg2 Qh5+> That's a fantastic line.
Jan-26-10  AdrianP: <Ivanchuk taking a lot of time> I'm sure Ivanchuk's the sort of player who would take the time to exhaust this sort of position simply for the pleasure of doing so... The competitive element of chess always seems to come second for Chukky, and he won't mind playing a bit of blitz later on in the game...
Jan-26-10  ILikeFruits: who shall...
win this...
motha...

Domdaniel: 23.Bd2 - threatening both Bc3 and Ba5 - is another idea for white.
Jan-26-10  Eyal: "Carlsen and Kramnik are probably going by Chucky from time to time to make sure he's still awake - 'come on, we have to catch this guy! What are you doing?!'" (Mig Greengard on ICC)
Jan-26-10  norami: He can't play blitz even if he wants to. The increment forces him to save 30 seconds for each move.

Mateo: I am wondering if Shirov made a draw offer, although it doesn't suit his style.
Jan-26-10  Eyal: Well, looks like they're going for this spectacular drawing line...
Jan-26-10  AdrianP: Looks like we might see <Eyal>'s beautiful drawing line.

<norami> Of course!

Jan-26-10  whiteshark: <BishopofBlunder: <Ivanchuk is certainly having a long think on this (can't say that I blame him).>> But it's only the second move after the move deviation, so if it's not what AdrianP suggested I think he's probably only badly prepared.

Domdaniel: Given the speed with which ...Rxc6 was played, the whole thing looks like a pre-cooked drawing line.
Jan-26-10  Eyal: After 24.Qxc6 Ng3+, 25.Rxg3 would be bad because of 25...Qxb2 followed by Rb8! with a winning attack.
Jan-26-10  AdrianP: <Domdaniel> Yes, I'm sure Shirov had all this on his laptop screen last night, but possibly Chukky had to do a bit of thinking on his feet (metaphorically speaking).
Jan-26-10  Eyal: <Ivanchuk is certainly having a long think on this (can't say that I blame him).> <But it's only the second move after the move deviation, so if it's not what AdrianP suggested I think he's probably only badly prepared.>

Well, it's not exactly a symmetrical situation - Ivanchuk couldn't really have expected Shirov to repeat Leko-Caruana...

  Domdaniel: Another unfortunate sideline is: 25.hxg3 Qxg5 26.f4?? ... when Black forces mate with, eg, 26...Qh5+ 27.Rh2 Qf3+ 28.Rhg2 Qd1+ 29.Kh2 Qh5#
Jan-26-10  Marmot PFL: Looks like its on to Carlsen-Kramnik soon.
Jan-26-10  kellmano: Very considerate of these two to draw quickly so we can watch another game.
Jan-26-10  AdrianP: Yep, Carlsen-Kramnik has my vote - v. interesting position.
Jan-26-10  kellmano: Nakamura - Karjakin looks good. Naka's bishop is outrageously positioned.

Domdaniel: The difference on the clocks here recalls Short's Nimzoindian in his title match with Kasparov. Which he was foolish enough to repeat in a later game, after the Gazza team had found the holes.

Jan-26-10  malthrope: Yes, no question about it... Just follow the point leaders on the crosstable. The game <"Carlsen vs Kramnik"> is next in line! :P

That is, of course, if <CG.com> is ^up^ for it? ;)

Jan-26-10  percyblakeney: Apparently it's a good idea to follow the post mortems, according to the tournament home page Shirov just played the same drawing line in this game that Leko suggested after Leko vs F Caruana, 2010.
Jan-27-10  Eyal: From the Daily News video on the tournament's site:

Q: But you know it was played before in this tournament?

Ivanchuk: OK, Leko-Caruana was eh… very… similar, but ok, he made some improvement.

Q: You were familiar with that game? You knew that game?

Ivanchuk: OK… you want to know too much… (walking away)
