Dec-10-09  Kaspablanca: Mr. Kasparov, tear down this wall!:
Kasparov vs Kramnik, 2001
Dec-10-09  Cercatore: Why Carlsen didn't play a5 when he have the rook in A column?? If en-passant, he took the pawn back capturing in a6 with rook or king, if don't, he maybe has a queen and queen side free.
Dec-10-09  magnuschess: how many elo will carlsen loose after this draw can anyone tell me ?
Dec-10-09  adair10: Probably in the range of 2.3-2.5
Dec-10-09  Cibator: Howell's moving castle (and knight).

Bravo! I think we have a pun of the day, and there's been a lot of competition!

Dec-10-09  PinnedPiece: Just in case future kibitzers are unsure if 52..Ra2 in this game has been mentioned yet (in chron-order):

Dec-10-09  magnuschess: i am sure that after this came , carlsen would be so carefull especially in the endgame , and i think he should'y play for opposite's time... if he would think for move 52.. he would find the winning move ofcourse , but he didn't think so much and just play to do some pressure on howell's clock !
Dec-10-09  weisyschwarz: Nice scrappy work by Howell. Carlsen sliced up his game from the beginning, situating him with isolated and doubled pawns. The underdog fought with tooth and nail.
Dec-10-09  whatthefat: Two pictures of Howell giving Magnus the stare:

Dec-10-09  mack: Carlsen did not look happy afterwards. It may not just have been the result -- it may have something to with us colliding as I rushed to the bar and he rushed to the lift.

chancho: Jeez <mack>! Leave the poor kid alone! ;P
Dec-10-09  Cercatore: After 2h of game, i thinked that Carlsen has a winning game. Maybe he must continue this match, play a5, take the b pawn, and use his king in the middle of chessboard.

But... of course, i'm a beginner.

Dec-10-09  whiteshark: <mack> More dets, pls.
Dec-10-09  Violence: Kasparov would have won this.
Dec-10-09  kurtrichards: You can't win 'em all, Magnus.
Dec-10-09  DiscoJew: what a game!
Dec-11-09  notyetagm: <JG27Pyth: WTH??? Did magnus just miss a simple win???

Ra3?? After Rxh7 how would howell answer Rg1+>

Proves that Carlsen is human, not a chess machine.

Actually... I was wrong there but the idea I had(and miscalculated) does turn out to be the winning idea that Carlsen misses two moves later (and which I did re-find and correctly calculate OTB as I was watching the game. Go me!)

But yeah, it certainly does show that young Carlsen is human.

I heard that he was quite visibly unhappy after the result and had a minor hissy... is this confirmed?

Dec-11-09  ycbaywtb: what's worse? drawing and going home to stew on it, or drawing and having to face your teacher, possibly the greatest to have ever played?

sometimes it may not be great to be Magnus

although i suspect Garry is respectful in his teaching, after all Carlsen just turned 19

Dec-11-09  Libispusher: One has to give David some credit for the save. "Tenacious D" giving his opponent two free knight moves starting on the 35th (although he was probably on "D for desperation" mode at that point).

He seems to have a propensity at spending a good chunk of his time way before the controls.

Reminded me of his game at the world juniors:

Li Chao vs D Howell, 2008

FSR: Unbelievable that Carlsen blew this win.
Dec-11-09  FHBradley: It's not unbelievable at all. Even the strongest of the strong blunder at times, a phenomenon that is known outside the chessboard, too. I would be inclined to say it's human.
