Phony Benoni: FIrst thing I saw were the bishops, and figured it would be a Boden's Mate. No queen to sacrifice though, so took a second look and saw the Anastasia-like set-up.

It's nice to know these name, if only because they make the patterns easier to describe.

Sep-23-13  Patriot: 19.Rxa7+ Kxa7 20.Ra1+ and mate next.
Sep-23-13  estrick: No fair Empress in yon tower available to be sacrificed on this Monday?

Then the next most valuable thing, one of the towers themselves, must be sacrificed! With one tower in reserve that can be brought up, the adverse king will surely fall.

Sep-23-13  lost in space: I love Mondays!

19. Rxa7+ Kxa7 20. Ra1+ Ba2 21. Rxa2#

Sep-23-13  Doniez: After yesterday impressive Gligoric mate sequence, a simple rook sac. After Rxa7, the Black King is forced to take the Rook, and the second Wite Rook mates sliding to a1. Credits to the Bishop...
Sep-23-13  Kikoman: <19. Rxa7+!> waaaaaaaahhhhhhh! And that's it!

;D

Sep-23-13  morfishine: <19.Rxa7+> forces mate after 19...Kxa7 20.Ra1+ Ba2 (I wonder if anyone overlooked this?) 21.Rxa2#

*****

Sep-23-13  NewLine: Completely missed Ba2! resource ;)
Sep-23-13  diagonalley: how is it that anybody with a rating of 2246 could possibly fall into such a simple mating net(?!?!?!)... it almost defies belief
Sep-23-13  M.Hassan: 19.Rxa7+ Kxa7
20.Ra1#
Sep-23-13  Abdel Irada: At last: a puzzle Sarah Palin can solve.

Just remember: <Don't retreat ... reload!>

Sep-23-13  Once: I imagine white could not believe his luck. After the queens are exchanged, black hands white the half open a file and the problem of how to defend his loose a7 pawn.

Black chooses to defend said pawn with his king rather than with a6. The problem with this plan is that he has to walk into a stalemate position after 17. Bf4+ Ka8

Then comes the bit where white would have been crossing his fingers. He nonchalantly plays 18. Kf2, preparing his little mate trick.

At this point, black could and should have held it all together with a move like a6, b5 or Nb8. Instead he does not sense the danger plays the disastrous 18...h6.

Moral: always be on the lookout for surprising moves when your own or your enemies king is stalemated. SKGM = stalemated kings get mated.

Sep-23-13  agb2002: White has the bishop pair and one pawn for a bishop and a knight.

The black king cannot move. This detail immediately suggests the possibility of a corridor mate: 19.Rxa7+ Kxa7 20.Ra1+ Ba2 21.Rxa2#.

Sep-23-13  Morttuus: An easy one, even for me early in the morning...:-)

White rook kills the pawn on a7,
Black king is on the way to heaven,
What shall we do with checkmated black king
early in the morning?

Sep-23-13  SamAtoms1980: 19.Rxa7+ Kxa7 20.Ra1+ and all Black has left is to decide whether he wants to bother with 20....Ba2 21.Rxa2#.
Sep-23-13  whiteshark:

Pirrot of Gowd,
you take away the sin of The World, grant us peace.

Sep-23-13  Nick46: Whatever Caro-Kann do I Kann do better.
I grant today's was very easy. No fancy pirouettes required.
Sep-23-13  Abdel Irada: <Nick46: Whatever Caro-Kann do I Kann do better. I grant today's was very easy. No fancy pirouettes required.>

Q: What is the essential difference between philosophy and chess?

A: Immanuel Kant but Caro-Kann.

Sep-23-13  patzer2: <Once: I imagine white could not believe his luck.> When I make a blunder like 18. h6?? and see a reply like 19. Rxa7+ , I can imagine hearing my opponent in a deep voice immitating Elvis's performance ending "thank you, thank you very much."

Domdaniel: Start scanning at a1. The layout on the a-file strongly suggests a mate starting with Rxa7+. Check whether the other Rook can swing across from h1. Check whether b8 is covered. And that's enough - no need to look further.
Sep-23-13  BwanaVa: Too many blunders to simply be blunders...
Sep-23-13  zb2cr: Very easy indeed. 19 Rxa7+, Kxa7; 20. Ra1+, Ba2; 21. Rxa2#.
