May-14-18  landshark: I saw the line with 32.Qf6+ and saw it mated which was good enough for me.
May-14-18  AlicesKnight: Looks like Rxg6+ - Qg4+ - Rh3# and nothing to stop it. Black's kingdom could do with a horse.
May-14-18  malt: 31.R:g6+ K:g6 32.Qg4+
(32.Qf6+ Kh7 33.Rh3+ Kg8 34.Rh8# )
32...Kh7 33.Rh3#

31.Rg3 also works

May-14-18  Once: I also went for Qf6+ - one move slower but prettier. The queen anchors herself on f6 and wherever the black king runs we give mate with the rook.

31. Rxg6+ Kxg6 32. Qf6+

Now the king can run to h5 or h7.

32...Kh7 33. Rh3+ Kg7 34. Rh8#

32... Kh5 33. Rh3+ Kg4 34. Rh4# (Qh4# also works, but isn't as pretty).

Okay, okay, so it's one move slower than the game line and there are two variations instead of one. But I maintain that this is purttier.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

May-14-18  Lovuschka: I saw FSR's line. But then I just looked quickly at it. Of course 32.Qg4+ is faster.
May-14-18  saturn2: 32 Qf6 because the queen should get to the king as close as possible; 32 Qg4 because it is quicker.
May-14-18  schachfuchs: IMHO 32.Qf6+ instead of 32.Qg4+ spoils this instructive "lownmower" (didn't know that) pattern with two or three heavy pieces on adjacent lines/ranks towards the king.

takchess: It took some time to determine whether black had a tempo to block with the rook, she can not. Went with the lawnmower mate, also looked at rook and queen to f6 check as whites second move. Happy Monday Everyone !
May-14-18  Wiley: I saw Qg5...any move by black...Qg6+ then Rh3++ or visa versa if Black slides his King over to the h file for some reason. Does anyone see anything wrong with this?
May-14-18  saturn2: What comes after 25 QxNf6?
May-14-18  Walter Glattke: I call this "roller mate", it is for pupils, who are 2 rooks ahead, often had this in school before getting adult.
May-14-18  Walter Glattke: Google translator and Langenscheid dictionary are not perfect, the laundry has a "Heißmangel", where bed clothes get flattened through to White rollers, so I did with rooks in School, so is done here.
May-14-18  morfishine: Its a forced mate-in-three: <31.Rxg6+> 31...Kxg6 32.Qg4+ Kh6/h7 33.Rh3#

"Alexa, what is white's best 32nd move?"

"32.Qg4+ of course"

"Thank you"

May-14-18  thegoodanarchist: Easy, but more of a Tuesday level. Took me at least 12-15 seconds
May-14-18  thegoodanarchist: FSR lay off the LSD, man! ;)

  Willber G: <WorstPlayerEver: Weird. No one tried 32. Rf6+ Kg7>

Not that weird considering that it lets black off the hook.

May-14-18  NBZ: Count me as one of the many people who went with Qf6+ after Rxg6. It really is interesting how Qf6+ is so much more a focal move than Qg4+.

  Bubo bubo: White, who is already up a piece, wins with 31.Rxg6+ Kxg6 32.Qf6+, and it's mate after either 32...Kh7 33.Rh3+ Kg8 34.Rh8# or 32...Kh5 33.Rh3+ Kg4 35.Rh4#.

Penguincw: < nalinw: ... Penguincw also hallucinates that

31. ... Kf8 is possible ... >

We're all hallucinating on this very Monday. :)

< stacase: One of the disadvantages of these puzzles is the fact that you're coming to a situation cold. If you had been playing the game right along, you would know where it was going. >

That is true, but for me, it is balanced out by the fact that we are being told that there is a quick win in this position. If I had just played this game OTB, and nobody told me that I had a Monday puzzle-like position, would I have gotten it? Who knows.

May-14-18  lzromeu: 31.Rxg6+ Kxg6, obviously, but what about 32???

Look at that Qf6+ <once> or 32. Rg3+, the worst way:

32. Rg3+ Kf7 (forced); 33. Qh5+ (needed, or king scape), then:

33...Kf8 34. Qh8+ Kf7 35. Rg7+ Kf6 36. Rg8+ Kf7 37. Qg7#

or

33...Kf6 34. Qg5+ Kf7 35. Qg6+ Kf8 36. Qg8#

May-14-18  ndg2: There must be an interesting case of mass hallucination at work here because I too thought briefly that black's king could hide on h8, when clearly it can shuffle himself only to h7 at that point after Qg4+.

What kind of positions cause those kinds of neurological condition?

May-14-18  BOSTER: White'd win with brilliance playing 26.Rxf6 not Bxf6.
May-14-18  condor: What's the point of having a puzzle when white is already a piece up
