Dec-18-08  stacase: 21 Nh6+ was an obvious puzzle solving move. The White Knight's motor was running for move 23, it was just a question of where to go. I would have picked d7. Oh well!

Cool smothered mate!

Dec-18-08  newzild: I got the first few moves easy enough, but was stumped by what to do after 22...Kf8 23. Nd7+ Ke7 24. Qh4+ f6

I couldn't visualise Crafty's line 25. Nxf6 Ndxf6 26. Bxf6+

Now 26...Nxf6 runs into 27.Rd7+

Dec-18-08  ku0826: Nice support of double opened line-Bishops.
Dec-18-08  Antonius Blok: <DualCore> <C)...f6

and I'm not so sure, but what comes to mind is the combination

25.Qxh6

>

I think 25.Qxh6 would be more interesting, because of the threatening 26.Qf8+ Kd8 27.Nxf6!

And It seems that a a move like 25...Nec7 or 25...Nd6 don't solve the problem for blacks, coz after that the f6 pawn is defended only by one knight, and gives the possibility of combinations or fork:

25...Nd6 26.Bxf6+ Nxf6 26.Qxf6+ Qe8 27.Nxb6+ and the black Queen is lost...

Ok, It's a rapid analysis, maybe I've missed something!

Dec-18-08  Ladolcevita: failed as usual.....
I decide to find a chance to mate like this in my next game...its just so handsome.
Dec-18-08  withingrace: wow i missed the smoother mate. i pretty mate indeed.
Dec-18-08  agb2002: The move I find most interesting is 21.Nh6+:

A) 21... Kh8 22.Nexf7 mate.

B) 21... Kf8 22.Nhxf7 followed by Ng5 or 22.Nd7+ Ke7 23.Ng8+ Kd8 (23... Kd6 24.e4) 24.e4 with a considerable advantage in both cases.

C) 21... gxh6 22.Qg4+

C.1) 22... Kh8 23.Nxf7 mate.

C.2) 22... Ng7 23.Nxf7 Kf8 (23... Kxf7 24.Qxg7 mate) 24.Qxg7+ Ke7 25.Nd6+ and 26.Qd7 mate.

C.3) 22... Kf8 23.Nd7+ Ke7 24.Rxd5

C.3.a) 24... Bxd5 25.Qh4+ f6 (25... Kd6 26.Be5 mate) 26.Nxf6 Nxf6 27.Qxf6+ Kd6 28.Be5 mate.

C.3.b) 24... exd5 25.Qh4+

C.3.b.i) 25... Kd6 26.Be5+ Ke6 27.Nf8+ Kxe5 28.Qf4 mate.

C.3.b.ii) 25... Ke6 26.Nf8+ Kd6 27.Be5+ Kxe5 28.Qf4 mate.

C.3.b.iii) 25... f6 26.Nxf6 threatening Nxe8+ with a very strong attack.

Time to post and see what kind of lesson I’ll receive today (yesterday’s was embarrassing but a good lesson anyway!).

Dec-18-08  PhilFeeley: <al wazir: I didn't even see 21. Nh6+. Still have my head in the holiday prize hunt, I guess.> Interesting how brains work. That was the only move I saw that showed promise.
Dec-18-08  spikester2848: Feels as if black could have defended better after the sac.
Dec-18-08  agb2002: I missed the obvious 23... Bf8 because I forgot Black's DSB. Probably I got the impression that it was only a mere witness.
Dec-18-08  karnak64: Cool puzzle -- interesting sequence to get to the smothered mate.
Dec-18-08  spreadsanity: 22...Kf8 is a much better defence for black, white ends up being only a little bit ahead. This is yet another puzzle where the 'solution' requires inaccuracies by the other side.

An Englishman: Good Morning: The position after 28.Qe5 in <govert's> Crafty analysis is strange indeed; I suspect anyone seeing that White Knight on g8 will assume it's supposed to be a Black one.
Dec-18-08  TheChessGuy: Hah! Smothered mate!
Dec-18-08  YouRang: About the only thing I can say is that I correctly guessed that the first move would be 21.Nh6+, since it opens the g-file for my queen to enter with check at g4, and it clears the a1-h8 diagonal for my bishop.

Beyond that, I had all sorts of difficulties visualizing ther positions and keeping track of the variations following 21...gxh6 22.Qg4+ Kf8 23.Nd7+ Ke7.

It's probably because I've got a cold and I'm tired. (Yeah, blame it on the cold - that's the ticket!)

Dec-18-08  DarthStapler: I got the first move but I thought after gxh6 white would play Nd7 with the threat of Qg4+
Dec-18-08  A.G. Argent: <An Englishman> Good morning? Are you over here, across the pond?

Domdaniel: <al wazir: I didn't even see 21. Nh6+. Still have my head in the holiday prize hunt, I guess.>

I saw Nh6+, *and* the next 3 moves, but I still don't think I understood the position, never mind 'solved' it. That prize hunt, eh?

Dec-18-08  The beginner: Nice.

I dident get it, although I had guesed the Nh6, Qe4, with the idea to open the a1-h8 diagonal, but there where so many choices for the move order that I kinda gave up, after stearing at it for a while.

Hey <Dom>

I'm with you on this, saw three moves in and still didn't get it.

I still don't fully understand it even after looking at the answer.

If this is a medium steak then I'm going Vegan from now on.

Dec-18-08  peristilo: I agree with Dzechiel: this position is too hard for a thursday puzzle! You have to see lots of moves to find the right way. I got very tired after some tries!
Dec-18-08  yoyosd: I just recently started playing chess, so I'm just trying to learn even the basics. Can someone please explain to me the finish if knight takes Queen after the player resigned? I can't see the end game at all.
Dec-18-08  cyclon: A beautiful combination!
Dec-18-08  The beginner: <yoyosd>

After NxQ, white will follow up with Nf7 checkmate, as the king cant move anywhere. The mate pattern is called smothered mate.

Dec-18-08  The beginner: Also I agre the position was a litle hard for a thursday.

I gues the lesson to be learned here, is always look for the posibility to deliver a smothered mate when you have both knights close to the oponents king in the corner.
