Dec-18-08  Anatoly21: A very nice combination with a beautiful finish. Buhmann must be very happy with this piece of art.
Dec-18-08  zooter: 21.Bxe8 Rxe8 22.Nh6+ Now black has a few choices

a) 22...Kh8 23.Nexf7#

b) 22...gxh6 23.Qg4+ Kf8 (23...Kh8 24.Nxf7#) 24.Qh5 Re7 25.Qxh7 and mate is difficult to avoid

c) 22...Kf8 This seems to be the strongest defence. Now 23.Nhxf7 leads to a good attack (and a plus pawn for white though I don't see the mating attack in this)

Time to check

Dec-18-08  Infohunter: A novel way of arriving at a smothered mate. Quite pleasing.
Dec-18-08  zooter: hmmm...messed it all up!
Dec-18-08  KnightFortress: I'm confused. What happens after 22...Kf8?
Dec-18-08  dzechiel: White to move (21?). Material even. "Medium."

I spent a long time looking at 21 Nxf7, but I finally gave up on it and starting looking for other candidate moves. I now think the key must be

21 Nh6+

This is more forcing (in that the move gives check) and of black's three legal moves, one of them (21...Kh8) clearly is not playable, due to 22 Nexf7#.

That leaves us with

- 21...Kf8 and
- 21...gxh6

to consider.

After

21...Kf8

white can simply play

22 Nhxf7

and be up a clean pawn with a much better position, or go for what's behind the curtiain with

22 Nd7+ Ke7 23 Ng8+ Kd8

but I don't see that going anywhere.

We need to also look at

21...gxh6 22 Nd7

This last move covers f6 twice (with the knight and the bishop on b2), as well as cutting of f8 as a flight square for the black king.

The threat now is 23 Qg4+ Ng7 24 Qxg7#.

I'm still unclear on how this goes down, black has lots of tries in this position. It seems to me he can give back the piece in a number of different ways and avoid mate.

<MAJ> Does your algorithm rate this position in the "Thursday" difficulty range? It seems tougher to me than that.

Dec-18-08  skymasterson: <KnightFortress> after 22...Kf8, 23 Nd7+, Ke7, 24 Bf6+, Kd6, 25 Qf4+, e5, 26 Qxe5#.
Dec-18-08  think: I got close. I didn't see Nxf7 after Ng7, so I tried 21. Bxe8 Rxe8 22. Nh6+. Doesn't this win for White as well as the text?
Dec-18-08  think: Wait, now I see my problem. After 21. Bxe8 Rxe8 22. Nh6+ gxh6 23. Qg4+ Kf8, 24. Nd7+ doesn't work because it isn't protected by the bishop.

I got so close!

Dec-18-08  ruzon: <skymasterson: <KnightFortress> after 22...Kf8, 23 Nd7+, Ke7, 24 Bf6+, <Kd6>, 25 Qf4+, e5, 26 Qxe5#.>

Huh? 24...Nexf6 and White loses a Bishop.

I did not see 22...Ng7 as a defense, probably because I couldn't (and still can't) see a good continuation for White after 22...Kf8. I did see 22...Ng7 23. Nxf7 Kxf7 24. Qxg7 but I didn't see the little # at the end.

Sneaky: Who cares about THIS puzzle... the real puzzle is, what's a seven letter word for "Dropping acid?" Hmmm "tripping" is 8 letters, "dosing" is 6 letters... "gratefuldead" is way too long ;-)
Dec-18-08  DualCore: <skymasterson: <KnightFortress> after 22...Kf8, 23 Nd7+, Ke7, 24 Bf6+, Kd6, 25 Qf4+, e5, 26 Qxe5#>

I might just be pulling a blond moment here, but why did you choose 24... Kd6?

Mainly, whats the killer move after 24... Nexf6?

Dec-18-08  zooter: I still think

21.Bxe8 Rxe8 22.Nh6+ gxh6 23.Qg5+ 24.Kf8 Qh5 white has enough compensation for the piece and should easily pick up a few more pawns for black to avoid mate and has a good attack...

Sneaky: By the way, another puzzle is this: why is this only a Thursday puzzle and not a Sunday puzzle? Isn't this a bit insane? I briefly considered Nh6+ and I sort of liked it but regarded it as "muddy waters". Now I'm starting to see the idea: with the bishop beating down on g7, any knight sacrifice that strikes your fancy is bound to rip black apart.
Dec-18-08  crafty: 22...♔f8 23. ♘d7+ ♔e7 24. ♕h4+ f6 25. ♘xf6 ♘dxf6 26. ♗xf6+   (eval 4.48; depth 12 ply; 500M nodes)
Dec-18-08  DualCore: <ruzon> my idea for 22...Kf8

22... Kf8
23.Nd7+ Ke7
24.Qh4+

A)24...Kd6
25.Be5#

B)24...Nf6
25.Bxf6

B1)25...Nxf6
26.Qxf6+
and black has a bad position (I'd like to be white here, is all I'm saying :P)

B2)25...Ke8
26.Nxb6+

and the black queen comes off the board...

(Note that, if 25...Kd6 leads to the same mate as (A))

C)...f6

and I'm not so sure, but what comes to mind is the combination

25.Qxh6
26.Qxh7+

I might go further into this in the afternoon. I need some sleep and am way to tired to be doing this :P

Dec-18-08  DualCore: awwww, crafty got a different line after ...f6.

ah well, I came closer than I thought

al wazir: I didn't even see 21. Nh6+. Still have my head in the holiday prize hunt, I guess.

But after 21...Kf8, I don't think white has an easy win. For example, if 22. Nhxf7 Ba6 23. Qf3, then 23...Nf6 leaves black with some defensive resources.

Dec-18-08  beginner64: Ouch!! I got so close, but like zooter, I started with Bxe8. I really cant say why I thought that move was necessary!

Doh! It would have been fine if I hadnt seen the 2nd knight dance to Nh6, but then to get so close and mess up with wrong move order. Hmph.

Dec-18-08  zooter: <beginner64: Ouch!! I got so close, but like zooter, I started with Bxe8. I really cant say why I thought that move was necessary!>

The reason I thought that 21.Bxe8 was necessary was that the knight on e8 can jump to d6 and protect f7 in certain lines. So I wanted to eliminate that key protection for f7...

I still haven't seen an explanation as to why 21.Bxe8 followed by 22.Nh6 is bad

Dec-18-08  govert: Crafty played like this:
21. Nh6+ Kf8
22. Nd7+ Ke7
23. Ng8+ Kd8
24. e4 Rc7
25. Nxc5 Rxc5
26. Rxc5 bxc5
27. exd5 Bxd5
28. Qe5

With a white advantage of >7.00 according to crafty

Dec-18-08  govert: zooter, my guess is that 21.Bxe8 removes the possibility of keeping a Knight on d7 safely, which is needed in some lines.
Dec-18-08  ellenliisbet: very nice, I guess Queen to g4 had to be something to do with it, but didn't see the whole picture clearly. very pretty! :)
Dec-18-08  TheCap: Ng7 seems a blunder, Kf8 seems to save the day...
I think it is difficult to anticipate weak moves; not "medium"

chrisowen: 21.Nxf7 looked tempting as well..Kxf7 Ne5 Kf8 Qh5. It needed a sharp mind spotting all the variations once Nh6+ especially if 22..Kf8.
