Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-20-08  satch boogie: Black really played horribly in this game, even with a rook ahead. 16...Ne3 was terrible, 16...Qxe4 should have been obvious.
Sep-22-08  Cactus: I suspect Smirnov wasn't trying here, seeing as he's a Master level player.
Dec-06-08  TheaN: 16....Qxe4 0-1? 2.Ra3 is no exchange sacrifice, it is a King sacrifice: meaning that playing this is what beginners do.

  alexmagnus: Russian Cup semifinal?!
Dec-31-18  whiteshark: Here's an even stranger Smirnov game from the same tournament: https://www.365chess.com/view_game....

(--> Hyper-960; file-crack moves and ♖h1 isn't really there.... ;)

  master8ch: Doesn't 15...exf3 win a piece, putting Black a rook up?
Apr-15-20  sea7kenp: 21 ... g6 was, of course a Game Ending Blunder, but was there an alternative? 21 ... Qh6 might delay Mate, but 22 Nxf7+ loses the Queen.

  Dionysius1: I suppose a case could be made for thening along the lines of:

"Let's trade an undeveloped QR for Black's potentially valuable defensive KB, and trust that I can mount a KSide attack, where my QR wouldn't be significant, really quickly."

or

"My opponent is 900 rating points beneath me, let's give him exchange odds"

Nice 19th Century mentality!

I like the way White played 9.Nb5 expecting that a player of Black's rating would automatically play a6, allowing him to reposition his N with very little loss of time.
