Jun-12-08 | | Shams: this could be fun...
So much depends
Upon
A slightly better
King
In a B.O.C.
Ending
With a pair of Rooks
Still on board.
|
|
Jun-12-08 | | Jesspatrick: Oh, one more thing. This is yet another game that demonstrates the practical value of keeping Rooks on the board if there are opposite colored Bishops. Though perhaps this game was theoretically drawn, the task of drawing the draw is nearly intractable. The stronger player will usually win positions like this... and he did. |

 | | tamar: In Aerosvit did Magnus Carl
A stately endgame create
Where LSB on diagonals ran
Through corridors measureless to man
Down to a model mate. |

 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: Too bad for me I had to leave after 28...e5. Nimzowitsch wrote of the alternating attack on an opponent's weaknesses, and showed how to win with Bishops of opposite color. If you saw this game after say, move 35, you'd guess that this was one of Nimzo's lesser known gems. 28...e5 might have been good enough to keep equality, but Carlsen did a great job of keeping up the pressure. |

Jun-13-08 | | arnaud1959: Now everybody becomes afraid of "equal" positions against Carlsen. So what can be done? |
|
Jun-13-08 | | Jonber: Said Magnus: ‘My friend, your moves, in the end
Will avail you little but sorrow
For you’ve taken the bait, and I’m going for mate,
Brave Alexei Dmitrievich Shirov.
So take your last look on bishop and rook
And my monarch ascending a row --
By this, I imply, your king will die,
Brave Alexei Dmitrievich Shirov.’ |
|
Jun-13-08 | | natrix75: Under "site", is that the time they had left at the end? |
|
Jun-13-08 | | Travis Bickle: I think somewhere Bobby applauded this game! |
|
Jun-13-08 | | Xaurus: < Under "site", is that the time they had left at the end?> That is correct. |

Lovely poem.

Jun-13-08 | | fuerst: Wasn't Carlsen's win VS Karjakin in a somewhat similar ending. And Karjakin did blunder allowing a winning mating threat.
Psychological warfare vs.Karjakin?:-)I like Carlsen quite much but it'll be good if there's someone ,who can defeat him from time to time. |
|
Jun-13-08 | | Progman: I believe Carlsen is harvesting big time for his fearless encounters with calculating beasts like Anand - even though he lost the majority of those. "I can win dead drawn positions against a super GM" is much in the same bracket as "I can beat the world number one" Now, HOW to convert believes to results comes with experience if your talent is there. If you want to be world champion let alone world number one for a period of time - you perhaps need this kind of "inflated" self esteem as a starting point. |

Jun-13-08 | | Augalv: Really weird day.Shirov against Carlsen bundered a mate in equal position, althought it was not easy to play it, Ivanchuk failed to score in superior position, Onischuk was better against Svidler but went wrong in several moves.Really weird... click for larger viewIt's Carlsen Magnus - Shirov Alexey, Aerosvit 2008, 5th Round.Position after 40 moves.f5 pawn is a bit shaky but it's hard to believe that Black can loose this. 41.Be2 Bc3 42.Bb5 Rd1+ 43.Kg2 Ba5 44.Rf4 Kg6 45.a4 Bc3 46.g4 Like it or not, White must do this to make some progress.46.e4 fxe4 47.Rxe4 Rd2 is going nowhere. 46..fxg4 47.Be8 Be5 48.Bxf7+ Kg5 49.Re4 Kf5 50.Rc4

 | | tpstar: Carlsen pressed on unabated
To find winning chances created
After playing so masterfully
That 61 ... Bg7?? catastrophe
So poor Shirov found himself mated |
|
Jun-15-08 | | THE pawn: This is quite a beauty here. The endgame was objectively drawn, but Carlsen manages to throw a mating net with phenomenal ressources. There's something about this kid... |
|
Jun-16-08 | | MindCtrol9: <THE pawn>I said one day he was to became Champion of the World, and he will.He is getting stronger and stronger, and can beat anybody. |

Jun-16-08 | | newton296: awesome mate at the end ! carlson is a force !
imo only anand and kramnik appear able to stop carlson from becoming champ |

Jun-17-08 | | notyetagm: <Xaurus: I'm Norwegian and I find all this a bit unreal :D> Nothing unreal about it.
Morphy was American, Capablanca was Cuban, Fischer was American, Kasparov was Russian, Carlsen is Norwegian. A chess genius has to come from -SOME- country, right? Why not Norway? |

 | | HeMateMe: I'm guessing that GMs play these drawish openings against Carlsen, because they are just trying to get a half point, and don't think they can win....and he is killing people in these very drawish looking positions! It will be fun to watch his games, and see him get even better. Best will be a match against Anand or kramnik at classical time control. |
|
Jun-19-08 | | talisman: ya not talking about shirov.....right?...who are you talking about? |
|
Jun-21-08 | | Knight to f6: <newton296:only anand and kramnik appear able to stop carlson from becoming champ> One must remember that Carlsen is fifth in the world, not third. Theoretically, Morozevich and Topalov should be able to beat him as well. Incredible play in the tournament though. Well done, Carlsen! |
