Jun-29-07  MyriadChoices: Knight, why do you want Kramnik to blunder? Wanting Leko to win is one thing, but wanting him to win because of a stupid mistake degrades the victory. Why can't you just accept the fact that Kramnik defended tenaciously and that Leko couldn't break him?
Jun-29-07  boz: Some will yawn and say "another draw" but that was pretty tense. With a little more time Leko may have found a way to increase the pressure.
Jun-29-07  chessmoron: At least is not a 15-21 draw. Everything fine. Very nice pressure by Leko here. Exciting draw here.
Jun-29-07  beenthere240: This game does not look like an advertisement for the Petroff.
Jun-29-07  Ybrevo: Draw yes, but a good fight in what looked like a drawn game around move 22-24.

chancho: Maybe seeing a guy draw and win with such consistency is something that annoys some fans. I hated the Lakers of the 80's because they were so damned good. So I can relate.
Jun-29-07  THE pawn: A draw is alright here I think. How do you want Kramnik to exploit that tiny advantage? I think this is just superficial and there is no available ressource to finish Léko off.
Jun-29-07  Tomlinsky: It was way more interesting than most of the Slavs everyone seems to be pre-wired in believing are automatically exciting.
Jun-29-07  chessic eric: aw dang.

Yes there seems to be no advantage here for Kramnik after 39. Qd6 Qxd6 40. Nxd6:

Sooner or later White will get his pawn back (f7 or a7).

al wazir: After 33...Re7, white should have played 34. g4 immediately, with the threat of 35. Nf5.
Jun-29-07  Marmot PFL: If Aleeksev wins today (likely) his game with Kramnik will decide 1st place.

chessgames.com: Thanks to everybody for stopping by today. We'll be doing it again tomorrow morning at 9:00am. See you then!
Jun-29-07  acirce: Online translation of Landa's interesting concluding comments on chesspro.ru, turning out remarkably intelligible: <Contenders have come to the press centre and with interest assort a party literally in meter from your commentator. Vladimir considered, that at black a dangerous position, Peter opposite tries to prove, that all was not so terribly for black. The conclusion - Peter somewhere has let out Vladimir, but anything concrete and has not been found - probably once will help Fritz 12?>

Peligroso Patzer: <Marmot PFL: If Aleeksev wins today (likely) his game with Kramnik will decide 1st place.>

They face each other in the last round on Sunday (with Alekseev playing White). Before then, however, Round 6 must be played, in which Alekseev has Black against Anand, whilst Kramnik has White against Naiditsch. So the precise significance of Sunday's showdown will not be known for another 24 hours or so.

Jun-29-07  Marmot PFL: That is a good point. Kramnik will be a big favorite against naiditsch, who it's hard to believe actually won Dortmund once.
Jun-29-07  YouRang: I know that when a game is drawn, you can't have a dancing rook, but maybe a shrugging rook? Or two rooks shaking hands?
Jun-29-07  mathematician: switch game?
Jun-29-07  chessic eric: <mathematician> I'm interested...(winks to <cg.com>)

<YouRang> novel, but it might take away from the dance...

Jun-29-07  newton296: good god man, It's all theory too move 23. I think these two wanna save there ideas for mexico. I guess that makes sense to save your best for the unified world championship!! At least leko deviates with 24) Qb3
Jun-30-07  Karpova: There's a video showing Kramnik and Leko analysing the game afterwards: http://www.schachbund.de/news/artic... It's size is about 10 Mb, it's in .wmv format
Jul-01-07  Karpova: <A pity, since, as spectator RueeLopaith put it, "every time the Petroff loses, an angel gets its wings."> http://www.chessninja.com/dailydirt/
Jul-02-07  jokerman: why is this a draw?
Jul-02-07  Ragh: <why is this a draw?> Nice joke <jokerman>.
Jul-02-07  Marmot PFL: Not an unreasonable question. Black could try to use the extra pawn but I think the answer is that with Kramnik in clear first and due for white next round against the last place player the risk involved outweighed the reward.
