Qa5 is just surrender, instead of checking, why? 53. ... e4 is a trap easily seen, but he does not even try it. However, more interesting is 47. Kh2 Qf2+ (instead of Kg7) 48. Qg2 (forced) and now Qa7 (and alternatvely Qb6 might need attention). In this position the advance of the a-pawn is stopped for now, does anybody see how White could successfully proceed? |

Checking from the a-file until the White king enters c6/d6 is an easy defense (except Kc2 Qa4 Kb4 Qd4, where Black is forced away from the a-file). And Kc6/d6 should not lead to a hideable King, around the own Queen and the Pa7 it seems, there is not enough shelter, because the typically needed 7th-rank countercheck is blocked by the Pf7. |

Ok so whites got quite a few pawns for his troubles, but do they stand a chance with only his queen and king to support them? I would think black can stop the a6 pawn from going anywhere... white might be able to hold off black with checks, (maybe draw if he wants to?) but not obvious chances of a win, as opposed to how the actual game goes where he stays in front. By the way this is all in the head so I might've missed something. Can anyone enlighten me as to what whites plan for a win is after 32. ... Qxb4? or is he just left with a draw? |
