Nov-14-06 | | guidomiguel: I can only hope there was a better move for black than 27... Qxe5, I know his position is not comfortable, but giving up the exchange certainly didnt work out. |

 | | al wazir: Black refrained from taking the ♖ with 32...Qxb4. Wisely, I think, because of 33. Rxd5+. The other nice calculation was the one white made in allowing 41...exf2+, calculating that black would not be able to promote the ♙ on f2 or get a perpetual. That took balls. |

Nov-14-06 | | eaglewing: In the endgame with Q vs Q plus a-file passed pawn it goes down in only a few moves for Black, am I wrong with my impression, that Black didn't really try to fight for a draw? 54. ... Qa5 is just surrender, instead of checking, why? 53. ... e4 is a trap easily seen, but he does not even try it. However, more interesting is 47. Kh2 Qf2+ (instead of Kg7) 48. Qg2 (forced) and now Qa7 (and alternatvely Qb6 might need attention). In this position the advance of the a-pawn is stopped for now, does anybody see how White could successfully proceed? |

Nov-14-06 | | somitra: I didn't get the title "Homa the brave". Is there a pun (as usual on daily game)? |
|
Nov-14-06 | | TheBB: "Home of the brave" ... a phrase from the star sprangled banner I believe. |
|
Nov-14-06 | | eaglewing: Or was 54. ... Qa5 just a misgrip of the physical figure 'Queen'? Checking from the a-file until the White king enters c6/d6 is an easy defense (except Kc2 Qa4 Kb4 Qd4, where Black is forced away from the a-file). And Kc6/d6 should not lead to a hideable King, around the own Queen and the Pa7 it seems, there is not enough shelter, because the typically needed 7th-rank countercheck is blocked by the Pf7. |

Next we'll have "Konstantin Landa the free" ? |

Nov-14-06 | | aragorn69: Congratulations on an intensly played game <phoenix>! Would you care to share some analysis with us? Where did Black last go wrong in your opinion? 35.-Ne4, perhaps? Or even as late as 47.-Kg7 ? |

Nov-14-06 | | Archives: The guy who comes up with these puns for the daily GoTD, is my newfound hero. To come up with witty puns like that every day must be a hard task. I tip my hat to you sir. |
|
Nov-14-06 | | chesslearning: If 32...Qxb4, then 33. Rxd5+ exd5 34. Qxd5+ Nd6
Doesn't that halt white's attack? |
|
Nov-14-06 | | kevin86: At one time, there was a mascot for the Atlanta Braves called "Chief Noc'a Homa-who used to cheer that the Braves hit a long ball. Political correctness has long ago ended the chief's reign, but not the memory of him. Another pun-especially If Mr. Homa had lost previously: Revenge of the Seth. The pawn of white's got stronger as the game proceeded-its promotion was have been its last step as a pawn. |
|
Nov-14-06 | | The17thPawn: Excellent game by Mr. Homa. I wonder if this was his first Master scalp? This win had to be gratifying nonetheless. |
|
Nov-14-06 | | Tenderfoot: Those tripled pawns sure looked ugly, but white managed to make it work... definitely not something I would've thought to do. Same goes for black's passed pawn at the end. A great game. |
|
Nov-14-06 | | black knight c6: so whats the continuation(/refutation?) of 32. ... Qxb4?
Assuming its 33. Rxd5+,
33. ... exd5
34. Qxd5+ Nd6
Now is there anything apart from bishop takes? looks like the knight guards all the squares... :/
35. Bxd6 Qxd6
36. Qxf7+ Kc6 (this the right move?)
37. Qxa7
Ok so whites got quite a few pawns for his troubles, but do they stand a chance with only his queen and king to support them? I would think black can stop the a6 pawn from going anywhere... white might be able to hold off black with checks, (maybe draw if he wants to?) but not obvious chances of a win, as opposed to how the actual game goes where he stays in front. By the way this is all in the head so I might've missed something. Can anyone enlighten me as to what whites plan for a win is after 32. ... Qxb4? or is he just left with a draw? |
|
Nov-14-06 | | technical draw: The star SPANGLED banner, dummies. It starts, José can you see? |

Nov-15-06
 | | al wazir: <chesslearning, black knight c6>: I guess 32...Qxb4 33. Rxd5+ isn't a clear win for white after all. In fact, it looks more like a loss. |

Nov-23-06 | | Phoenix: Wow! I didn't see this coming. So much so, I didn't notice it until nearly 10 days later. D'oh! Thanks, Chessgames.com, it is an honor! I will try to answer all the questions on the game in the near future, but tomorrow is Thanksgiving and then it's off to the Motor City Open for three days. Be back soon! |

 | | Penguincw: Appropriate pun for today: Independence Day in the United States (for those who don't know, "Homa the Brave" is a pun on the last few words in the American national anthem, the Star Spangled Banner (home of the brave)). I also like how both players are from the United States. But wait, "Homa the Brave" is 3 words, but "Home of the Brave" is 4 words. https://plus.google.com/10348878641... I also see it was previously GOTD, but not on the 4th of July. |
