Jan-15-17  morfishine: A really excellent game vs the highly touted Pomar

Sep-27-24  stacase: OK not as straight forward as MTW this week, but still an obvious first move (-:
Sep-27-24  Lloyd Gross: I tried 21. g6 f6 22. gxh7 Rxh7 23. Rhg1+ Kh8 24. Qxh7+ Kxh7 25. Rd3
Sep-27-24  mel gibson: I didn't think it was necessary to distract the Black Queen.

scormus: Hmmm, my first thought was 21 Rd7 followed by the the first few movesof text, but didn't I think it was going to work out as well as it did. I second guessed and went with 21 Rhf1, threatening # and a lot of pressure, such as ... Rhf8 22 g6 followed by 23 Bxe5+. OTB it's what I would have played

As it turns out, SF agrees the text (ca. +6 for W), and rates 21 Rhf1 as weaaker but playable (ca. +4).

scormus: An aside, I notice my SF16 generally gives less decisive evals than <mel's> SF17. Not sure why.

Don't worry about it.
SF17 is supposed to be stronger - that's all that matters.

Why don't you update to SF17?

  scormus: <mel> Good idea, thanks
Sep-27-24  Mayankk: After spending some time on 21 g6 and forking ideas at e5,I decided to go with 21 Qh6+ Kg8 22 Rd7 Qxd7 23 Bxe5.

White is now threatening Qg7# and Black defense doesn't seem adequate.

A) 23 ... f6 24 gxf6 Bxf6 (24 ... Bf8 25 Rg1+) 25 Rg1+ wins

B) 23 ... Bf8 24 Qf6+ also mates soon

So, does it matter if it is 21 Qh6+ Kg8 22 Rd7 or 21 Rd7 Qxd7 22 Qh6+ ? Hopefully not.

Sep-27-24  Twilight of the Idol: I missed this one. I got hung up on 21. g6 (which doesn't seem to work, e.g. 21. ... hxg6 22. Bxe5+ f6 23. Qxh8+ Rxh8 24. Bxc7 Rc8! 25. Rd7 Kf8 26. Bd6 Bxe4 and white's busted) and 21. Rhf1, which doesn't seem to lead to anything either.

21. Rd7! didn't even occur to me. Maybe I can go for the perfect score next week(?).

Sep-27-24  King.Arthur.Brazil: The first king idea was: 21. g6 hxg6 22. Bxe5+ f6 23. Qxh8+ Kxh8 24. Bxc7. Therefore, B must protect his ♕: 22. gxh7 (Rxh7? 23. Rhg1+ Kf8 24. Qxh7) Bc5 23. Rhg1+ Kf8 24. Qh6+ Ke8 25. Rg8+ (Ke7 or f7 26. Qg7#) Bf8 26. Rxh8... must win. This seems easy, so I guess this is not the move.

al wazir: The game line is one ♙ better than

21. g6 (21...hxg6 22. Bxe5+ f6 23. Qxh8+ Rxh8 24. Bxc7 Bxe4) hxg6 22. Bxe5+ Bf6 23. Qxh8+ Rxh8 24. Bxc7 Bxe4 25. Rhe1 Bf3 26. Rd6 Rxh2 27. Rxe4.

Either way, it's a lot of trouble to just win an exchange.

Sep-29-24  Rosbach: Didn't get this one at all. Looked at Bxe5+ Qxe5 22. Rd7 to put pressure on f7 pawnbut Qxg5+ 23. Qxg5+ Bxg5+ looses.
