Oct-18-06 | | chessmoron: Quite simple for a Wednesday's puzzle. |
Oct-18-06 | | think: The double-minor piece sac was screaming to be played. It didn't really require much calculation. |
Oct-18-06 | | syracrophy: A cheap try of my for a pun: "Chao, baby" :-P |
Oct-18-06
 | | al wazir: The hard part was deciding whether to take with the ♗ or the ♘ first. I went with the ♗, because if black plays 31...Kf8 or Kh8 white can play either 32. Bxh7 or the Bxf7, with a threat of 33. Rg8+. But I was planning to play 34. Rag1 instead of exd6. |
Oct-18-06 | | syracrophy: <<<<al wazir: The hard part was deciding whether to take with the ♗ or the ♘ first.>>>> Its seems to be the same thing. If instead 31.♘xg6 hxg6 <31...fxg6 32.♗xg6 ♔h8 33.♗f7> 32.♗xg6 ♔f8 33.h7! <33...♔g7 34.♗c2+! <34...♔h8 35.♖g8#; 34...♔f8 35.h8=♕+; 34...♕xg5 35.♕xg5+>> |

Oct-18-06
 | | xenophon: bit easy i thought |
Oct-18-06 | | dzechiel: Got it. I think 31 e6 was also possible. |
Oct-18-06 | | Marco65: I thought 31.exd6 (with the idea of 32.Qd4 winning the knight) was winning but I miscalculated. Black can play 31...Rxd6 32.Qd4 Qf6! 33.Qxc5 Qxg5 34.Qxd6 Qxh4+ 31...Rxd6 and 32...Qf6! seems to be the only good defence anyway, for instance: a) 32...f6 33.Nxg6 hxg6 34.Rxg6+ should win (if there's nothing better, 35.Qxc5 takes back the piece) b) 31...Qf8 32.Nxg6 fxg6 34.Rxg6+ hxg6 35.h7+ Kg7 36.Qxf8+ Kxf8 37.h8=Q+ with an easy mate |
Oct-18-06 | | eblunt: <Al Wazir> if 34 Rag1 then 34 .... Bg4 and black has some defence. (if QxB black can force queen swap) |
Oct-18-06 | | greensfield: Got this one. White's previous move 30.e5 gives you the clue for the continuation. |
Oct-18-06 | | Chris1Clark: Does it count that I started with N first then Bish. Seems to make no material difference and the puzzle then unwinds accordingly. |
Oct-18-06 | | ahmadov: It is easy to notice that three pieces can take g6 pawn, but slightly difficult to immediately notice the mate. |
Oct-18-06 | | psmith: <eblunt> How does Black force a queen trade after 34. Rag1 Bg4 35. Qxg4? I don't think you're right. |
Oct-18-06 | | psmith: <AlWazir> Analysis with Fritz 5.32 seems to show that 34. Rag1 wins as well. The main line I have found is 34... Bf5 35. exd6! Qe4 36. Qg5! Qe4+ 37. f4 Qe2+ 38. Rg2 winning (threat of Qf6+). |
Oct-18-06 | | eblunt: <psmith> No, sorry you're right. I was was thinking after 34 .. Bf5 if 35 QxB then 35 ... Qxe5. 34 Rag1 looks winning , yes. |
Oct-18-06 | | zb2cr: I went for the Knight sacrifice on g6 first, planning for the Bishop sacrifice if Black captured. |
Oct-18-06 | | prinsallan: Got the whole sequence, but there must be several solutions. Everything in whites attack points at the black king. A king that is poorly defended. |
Oct-18-06 | | Titicamara: Fantastic game here. |
Oct-18-06 | | YouRang: I'm happy :-( that others found it so easy. I missed it. I even looked at the double piece sac, but didn't see 34. exd6!, clearing the a1-h8 diagonal with tempo (attack on the queen). |
Oct-18-06 | | YouRang: <greensfield: Got this one. White's previous move 30.e5 gives you the clue for the continuation.> Hey! How did you know what the previous move was without peeking? ;-) |
Oct-18-06 | | MyCatPlaysChess: I missed that the white Queen can be pinned to the King along the h2-b8 diagonal. Without having a board in front of me, I was thinking that 34.Rg7 overloads the black queen allowing the white queen to penetrate on either f6 or f8... this plan fails to the pin 34... Qxe5! |
Oct-18-06 | | percyblakeney: I thought it was tricky for a Wednesday. I looked at it for a minute and didn't see immediately what would follow after Kh8 and then guessed it all would start with e6 instead. |
Oct-18-06 | | Thrajin: For some reason I hear Mortal Kombat announcer Shao Kahn's voice saying "Li Chao Wins. Flawless Victory." |
Oct-18-06 | | kevin86: I looked for the sac at g6 with the rook firsty, but then saw that if the rook were saved and the bishop and knight sac-ed it would be a formidable fighter. Add that to the subtle queen move to attack on the diagonal-and you have a quick KO. |
Oct-18-06 | | clausantos: Even amateurs like me can get this puzzle. It's for monday... |
