I looked at the continuation 25...Bb4 and followed by 26.... Rb8 for a more lasting and prudent attack than the suicidal text moves. The question is simply black to move. It means guess what it was. Well I guess right. It did not say : "Black to move and win or Black to move and mate." |

OTOH, in your variation, 30...a5 31.♘f6+ gxf6 32.f5 ♕xg4 33.♕c3 ♖a8 wins inefficiently. Even worse is 29...♕xc2+ 30.♔a5 ♖b5+ 31.♔xa6 ♕xe4 32.♕b4 [] 32...♖xb4 33.♗xb4 ♕e2+, which also wins. The best continuation is 28...a5, mating in eight more moves, as posted by <chessmoron> and <scholes> above. |

It's a shame Black missed 27..Qb2+ , of course when you just sacrificed two pieces you have to win - quickly, or else you're in trouble. This puzzle is interesting because it shows you that finding a good sac isn't enough to win right away. |

| Apr-06-07 | | Crowaholic: I also considered Rxb2 but only saw Kxb2 Rb8+ which is pointless. The key to understanding the solution is that White must accept the next sacrifice Ba3+ and seeing Black's powerful mating threats after Kxa3 Rb8. White must play Nb5 or Nxe4 to make way for the queen and prevent Qd6+ and mate in two. But after Nxe4 computers see a mate in ten starting with Qb2+. It doesn't take a computer to realize that White's in trouble, though. After Nb5 Rxb5 White is still in trouble although, as was mentioned, Qb3 prevents the worst. Black can then use the white queen's immobility to gain material. It's tempting to just Rxb3+ but then Black only has a queen for two rooks and forfeits his mating threats. Computers say that Qa1+ Bb4 (to prevent Qc1+ and Nb5#) Qxf1 etc. is better. It's deeply ironic that Szabo discovered this utterly ingenious double sacrifice only to hand over the victory to Boudy a few moves later. |

I’m not even sure what the solution to the puzzle is! 24 … Rxb2; 25 Kxb2 Ba3+; 26 Kxa3 Rb8; 27 Nb5 holds off the immediate win and there’s still <MostlyAverageJoe>’s 25 Nxe4 dxe4; 26 Bc3 to consider. After Wednesday’s and Thursday’s puzzles it seemed to me that this week’s theme might be avoiding the obvious. Perhaps, then, 24 … Rxb2 isn’t the “solution”. I quite like <scholes>’s 24 … Be5 and I spent some time looking at 24 … Qd4; 25 Qd3 Qb4; 26 Nd1 Qa4 without coming to any firm conclusion. |
