tpstar: <SEMENELIN> I think the Nimz-Indian is fine for Black (especially on Nimzovich's birthday ;>D) but less successful when combined with ... d5 opening up the center. I prefer ... c5 aiming for a Huebner/Leningrad and keeping the center closed.

Looks like the teacher can instruct the pupil about the power of passed Pawns plus a weak back rank. And the pupil can instruct the teacher about clock management. =)

Nov-07-05  KingG: Well, he played it safe to make time control, but 40 Rd7 was the quickest win.
Nov-07-05  Gabriel315: indeed <Catfriend>. Speed chess has once again proven to be an excellent counterpart in spite of much contradiction against it from some classical chess players
Nov-07-05  lentil: i presume first time control is at move 40?
Nov-07-05  Catfriend: <lentil> I'm sure it is, because otherwise white would just resign! An hour will be added when black makes his 40 move.
Nov-07-05  KingG: <lentil> Agdestein's in big trouble if it's not.
Nov-07-05  Catfriend: Congratulations, Agdestein!
Nov-07-05  Gabriel315: ^^^ goes to show that sometimes it is most important to find the smartest move in the shortest amount of time in order for the game to continue

chessgames.com: Thanks to everybody for coming by today. We'll try to do this again for the 2nd game of the match tomorrow.
Nov-07-05  KingG: Wow, he's won. Great play by Agdestein, he looked to be in real trouble at one point.
Nov-07-05  nsteinme: How many more games in this playoff?
Nov-07-05  Catfriend: <chessgames.com> Thanks! It was very exciting to watch Agdestein's clock:)
Nov-07-05  Gabriel315: =) as i mentioned before i am a novice at overall chess play and was unaware that an hour would be added after the 40th move. On the brighter side i believe i made a valuable point even though it was not necessarily the situation that I was led to believe in
Nov-07-05  Gabriel315: thank you <chessgames.com> for allowing us to analyze this game live

offramp: Yes, thanks <chessgames>; it was even better for being a bit unexpected!
Nov-07-05  acirce: Well, this was disappointing. Is Carlsen going to finish 2nd after playoff in another Norwegian Championship?
Nov-07-05  Steppenwolf: 23 Rbe8 is the losing move for Carlsen. Moves a rook doing perfectly its job on b8 to a square that traps his other rook! Quite weak, really.
Nov-07-05  chessfreako: Wait a minute.. There's one point I don't understand. Why not 23...Nxf3?
Nov-07-05  crafty: 23...♘xf3+ 24. gxf3 ♕xa3 25. c7 ♖bc8 26. ♕c3 ♕xc3 27. ♘e7+ =   (eval -0.14; depth 13 ply; 500M nodes)
Nov-07-05  acirce: <Steppenwolf> I agree.

After 23..Nxf3+ 24.gxf3 at least it's still a game, even if I'd prefer White.

Nov-07-05  KingG: <chessfreako>

23...Nxf3+ 24.gxf3 Qxa3

25.c7(25.Qc3! might preserve some winning chances although the continuation 25...Rb3 26 Qc5! Qxc5 27 Rxc5 Ne8! 28 c7 Nxc7 29 Rxc7 Rxf3 30 Rxa7 looks drawish to me, although Fritz gives )

25...Qxf3! (25...Rbc8? 26.Qc3! Qa4 27.Ne7+ Kh8 28.Nxc8 Rxc8 29.Bxf4 )

26.cxb8Q Qh1+ 27.Ke2 Qg2+ 28.Kd1 (28.Kd3? Qxe4+ 29.Kc3 Nd5+ 30.Kb3 Rxb8+ )

28...Qg4+ 29.Ke1 Qg1+ draw by perpetual check

Nov-07-05  iron maiden: Carlsen's opening preparation seems to have been satisfactory, but after the opening he was just outplayed. I doubt he could've found the drawing line even if he'd made use of his surplus time.
Nov-07-05  Hesam7: <KingG> In your line why not 27. Kf2 ?

My engine thinks that 23... Rfe8 was the best move to play there.

Nov-07-05  Hesam7: Here is a line that leads to a defendable (?) rook ending:

23... Rfe8 24. Bxf4 Nxe4 25. Re3 Rbc8 26. Qe2 Qa4 27. Nxg7 Kxg7 28. Bxe5+ Rxe5 29. Qg4+ Rg5 30. Qxe4 Qxe4 31. Rxe4 Rxg2

Nov-08-05  KingG: <Hesam7> 27.Kf2!? .Yes, good point, it leads to a position where White has an extra piece for 3 pawns, and maybe White can create some threats. But if Black can avoid getting mated, he should at least be able to draw(perhaps by exchanging Queens?). I'm not sure how to evaluate the position, to me it's pretty unclear.

The analysis i did in the previous post was done in about 2 minutes, so there are probably loads more of mistakes. :)

The drawing line you give seems to be the correct one.
