19...Bxh3 was a great destruction of White's Kingside. After 20...Qd7 White must give back the piece, if 21.Kg2, then 21...Nh4. So, perhaps 18.Re1 and 19.Bf1 was better. After 36...Qg7 White was lost I think. If 37.Rf2, I think that 37...Rg1 wins. Black threatens 38...Qg3, so if 38.Rfd2 then 38...Rh1. |

The idea being..... 29. Ba5 Rc8 30. Bb6 Qg5 and it says the position is equal. I think the point is, the Bishop on
b6 covers the rook on g1.
Actually, even earlier, after 19....Bxh3, Fritz says 20. Ba5 is
a good answer, and white might even
have a slight edge.
But, I might have to let it run longer, there's a lot going on here. |

More interesting to me is the old problem of how does white attack quickly on the Queenside when the center is blocked? I think b4 works, to open up the Q-side so that white gets some some quick targets over there, before being overrun on the kingside. Couldn't understand the idea of moving the knight back and forth in the opening, when you know f5 is coming. Reshevsky seems to waste too much time here. |

What do you do with black? 20.... Qd7, white plays 21. Nb6 and says: "Thank you". So, you sac a pawn with 20.... b6, and you get 21. Bxb6 Qd7.
The first thing to note is, the bishop on h3 has nowhere to retreat. But, 22. gxh3 Qxh3 is bad for white. So, you play 22. Nf2 gxf2+ 23. Bxf2
first. Then white will win his piece back, but you can take your time:
23.... Bh6 24. Kh2! and then take on h3 next move.
I have no idea who is better.

Today I Googled it to discover that the Vince <Lombardi> Trophy is what's awarded to winners of the Super Bowl (showing tonight at 11:00pm GMT on at least 2 UK channels). I much prefer baseball to either American football or basketball and have been to half a dozen games in the US including current title holders, The Yankees, back in 1994 and The Durham Bulls, made famous by the Kevin Costner / Susan Sarandon film. Baseball's a great game full of all sorts of subtleties. American football is about as subtle as a Magnum at short range (IMHO) ;) |

Mind you, american football strikes me as rugby with a stutter, and even tighter trousers, so what do I know? As to the game itself, well it's a king's indian. So white's interest lies on the queenside and black's on the kingside. White wants to smash through on the b and c files, and then turn right. Black pushes forwards with f, g and h pawns, and then sacs pieces for a quick mate. The Bxg3 tactic, although pretty enough, is fairly thematic in the KID, especially if there is a black pawn on g3. As to tonight, sure the Colts are the odds on favourities, but wouldn't it be pure hollywood if New Orleans won? |

Now (thanks to the rules committee and demands of TV networks) its so easy to pass you would be crazy not to. Colts throw 2 passes for every run, about the reverse of the old Packer teams. Don Shula was another Lombardy guy, and once his Dolphins beat the Skins 21-14. Now the winning team alone usually scores much more than that total, often by the end of the 3rd qtr. |

Any 10 year span will include numerous rule changes, that will emphasize one aspect of the game more than another.
