  TheAlchemist: FIRST!!!

19...Bxh3 was a great destruction of White's Kingside. After 20...Qd7 White must give back the piece, if 21.Kg2, then 21...Nh4. So, perhaps 18.Re1 and 19.Bf1 was better.

After 36...Qg7 White was lost I think. If 37.Rf2, I think that 37...Rg1 wins. Black threatens 38...Qg3, so if 38.Rfd2 then 38...Rh1.

Aug-10-05  RookFile: Well, the game strikes me as very complex. There seems like an awful lot going on. For example, I think Reshevsky saw 19.... Bxh3 coming and
thought he could deal with it.

Fritz looked at this, for like 30
seconds, granted, not running all
night, and suggests an interesting
idea.

29. Ba5

The idea being..... 29. Ba5 Rc8 30. Bb6 Qg5 and it says the position is equal.

I think the point is, the Bishop on
b6 covers the rook on g1.

Actually, even earlier, after 19....Bxh3, Fritz says 20. Ba5 is a good answer, and white might even
have a slight edge.

But, I might have to let it run longer, there's a lot going on here.

Aug-11-05  Shrivel Up DEVO: I've been hit with that B x at h3 many times, some wins, some losses.

More interesting to me is the old problem of how does white attack quickly on the Queenside when the center is blocked? I think b4 works, to open up the Q-side so that white gets some some quick targets over there, before being overrun on the kingside.

Couldn't understand the idea of moving the knight back and forth in the opening, when you know f5 is coming. Reshevsky seems to waste too much time here.

Aug-11-05  RookFile: Yeah, it's really interesting.
Answer 19... Bxh3 with 20. Ba5.

What do you do with black? 20.... Qd7, white plays 21. Nb6 and says: "Thank you". So, you sac a pawn with 20.... b6, and you get 21. Bxb6 Qd7. The first thing to note is, the bishop on h3 has nowhere to retreat. But, 22. gxh3 Qxh3 is bad for white. So, you play 22. Nf2 gxf2+ 23. Bxf2 first. Then white will win his piece back, but you can take your time: 23.... Bh6 24. Kh2! and then take on h3 next move.

I have no idea who is better.

Nov-13-05  Koster: 34. Na8 shows Reshevsky's famous sense of humor.

Phony Benoni: Explanation for those who don't get the pun: the "Super Bowl" (chanmpitonsip of US football) is being played today, and the winner receives the <Lombardi Trophy>, named after the famous coach Vince Trophy.

OK. Now you can get back to commenting on the game.

Feb-07-10  mrkangaroo: reshevsky's handling of the opening was awful
Feb-07-10  markwell: Not only was the opening weak, what was all that nonsense with Rc8,Na8?
Feb-07-10  Cercatore: 37. Qe2??????????

Rff2 was better.

Feb-07-10  Garech: Very nice game from Lombardy. It's a shame he missed 36. ... Nf5! which was a forced mating line. For example: 37. exf5...Qxh3+! 38.Kxh3...Rh6+ 39.Bh4...Rg3+ 40.Kh2...Rxh4#

If he declines the knight then the queen sac is still mating.

Feb-07-10  goodevans: <RookFile: Yeah, it's really interesting. Answer 19... Bxh3 with 20. Ba5.

20 Ba5 looks much better than 20 gxh3, but I reckon 19 ... Bxh3 20 Ba5 b6 21 Bxb6 Qd7 22 Nf2 <Bxg2> 23 Kxg2 Nh4+ leaves black slightly better. It's complicated, though, and there are attacking possibilities for both sides.

Feb-07-10  belgradegambit: I picked the game and the pun for today. Like many others I also pick the Colts for the Lombardy Trophy.
Feb-07-10  goodevans: Like many of us on this side of the pond who aren't steeped in US culture, I often don't get the GOTD puns. Today I Googled it to discover that the Vince <Lombardi> Trophy is what's awarded to winners of the Super Bowl (showing tonight at 11:00pm GMT on at least 2 UK channels).

I much prefer baseball to either American football or basketball and have been to half a dozen games in the US including current title holders, The Yankees, back in 1994 and The Durham Bulls, made famous by the Kevin Costner / Susan Sarandon film.

Baseball's a great game full of all sorts of subtleties. American football is about as subtle as a Magnum at short range (IMHO) ;)

Feb-07-10  Once: <goodevans> I'm glad you can find it in you to like baseball. As far as I can see, it's just rounders with razzamatazz and tight trousers.

Mind you, american football strikes me as rugby with a stutter, and even tighter trousers, so what do I know?

As to the game itself, well it's a king's indian. So white's interest lies on the queenside and black's on the kingside. White wants to smash through on the b and c files, and then turn right. Black pushes forwards with f, g and h pawns, and then sacs pieces for a quick mate.

The Bxg3 tactic, although pretty enough, is fairly thematic in the KID, especially if there is a black pawn on g3.

As to tonight, sure the Colts are the odds on favourities, but wouldn't it be pure hollywood if New Orleans won?

Hey, <PB>, why isn't it called the "Trophy Trophy", then? :)

HeMateMe: Maybe they were referring to Vince's chess prowess? I have it on good authority that Vince was a tenacious fighter, especially in hard to draw endgames. he employed the hedgehog defence, and won the Green Bay city championsip several times, once with an 11-0 score!
Feb-07-10  AnalyzeThis: This victory by Lombardy was an important factor in Fischer winning his first US championship.
Feb-07-10  Jim Bartle: "...won the Green Bay city championsip several times, once with an 11-0 score!"

We know Lombardi played only decisive games. When offered a draw, he always told his opponent, "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing!"

Feb-07-10  Marmot PFL: Much different game in those days. Lombardy would run the ball down the other teams throat. Now (thanks to the rules committee and demands of TV networks) its so easy to pass you would be crazy not to. Colts throw 2 passes for every run, about the reverse of the old Packer teams. Don Shula was another Lombardy guy, and once his Dolphins beat the Skins 21-14. Now the winning team alone usually scores much more than that total, often by the end of the 3rd qtr.
Feb-07-10  AnalyzeThis: It's for that reason, that whenever we seek to compare teams separated even by only 10 years, that there are difficulties. Any 10 year span will include numerous rule changes, that will emphasize one aspect of the game more than another. For example, the 85 Chicago Bears were a great team; but if they can't do some of the stuff that they typically did on defense, they would have a problem.
Feb-07-10  chillowack: <Phony Benoni: Explanation for those who don't get the pun: the "Super Bowl" (chanmpitonsip of US football) is being played today, and the winner receives the <Lombardi Trophy>, named after the famous coach Vince Trophy.

What I find so remarkable about this post isn't Phony Benoni's complete and utter massacre of the word "championship;" it's the fact that nothing else is misspelled--not even "Lombardi," which would have been an easy one to miss for someone as drunk as PB must have been when he wrote this.

Phony Benoni: <chillowack> Sorry, but I can't use the excuse of drink. No matter how carefully I proofread my messages--and I always go over each one several times--I generally miss a typo or two.
Feb-08-10  ughaibu: But presumably "Vince Trophy" is a mistake?
Feb-08-10  goodevans: I'm not one normally given to supporting the underdog, but I feel I really must offer my congratulations to the Saints, the new holders of the <Lombardi Trophy>. May their efforts continue to inspire those still suffering from the legacy of Katrina.
Feb-08-10  kevin86: I rooted for the Colts, but were glad to see the Saints win. After 42 years of frustration and Katrina, they deserved a break.

White's kingside is a shambles and black a piece ahead to boot.
