Apr-20-06  yataturk: in the FIRST glance it seemed lik 26. Bh6 also works
Apr-20-06  think: I thought Bh6, but now I see that Qd4 puts a stop to that plan. It is the same mating theme, though, with domination on the black squares.
Apr-20-06  nsteinme: I was thinking 26. Bh6 then 26... Nf6 27. Re1 to threaten capturing Nf6 and subsequently mating or 26... Rd4orQd4 27.Rb4... these lines seemed winning to me, but I'm sure I just missed some things.
Apr-20-06  nsteinme: yeah, of course, 27. Rb4 doesn't work, Qxa1. nevermind, then.
Apr-20-06  notsodeepthought: Thought 26 ... Rd7 might help, but 27 Bc3 and black has the same problems as in the game.
Apr-20-06  dzechiel: Spent a couple of minutes on this one, but found the right continuation.

Considered 26 Bh6, but ...Qd4 seems to put the brakes on that idea.

Looked for ways to trap the queen with 26 Rb4, but the queen escapes to a6 or c2 without much effort.

Started looking at 26 Qf6 and looked at moves like ...Rf8 or ...Qe8, but 27 Bc3 ices the cake.

Just about right for a Thursday. Not too tough and not too pretty.

Apr-20-06  zerok: easy.
Apr-20-06  Deus Irae: Xpir3d, instead of playing ♗h6 in your line, White can play ♗c3, and mate at h8 is unstoppable.
Apr-20-06  XpiR3d: saw it right after i submitted it~ and then i killed msg~
Apr-20-06  blingice: I thought Bc3 first, with a dominating attack after Bh8, Re1, and so forth. (As in, I got it in the wrong order).
Apr-20-06  Aware: 4 for 4 this week, I have a chance to get 5 in a row for the first time.
Apr-20-06  chesswonders: Not 27. ♗h6, for black can counter with 27. .. ♕d4.
Apr-20-06  Ger7ry: Does Black have something better than 25. ... Nc5? Like maybe Rd7? or Qc6?
Apr-20-06  AlexandraThess: Well a bit harder than yesterday. I got it in 17 sec. First i thought of 26.Bh6 but then i saw that black could withstand the assault with 26...Qd4.
Apr-20-06  Drifter: a very well known mode of operation. -using tactics to exploit this type of castled position that is deviod of the kings bishop.
Apr-20-06  ckr: Bh6 jumped out and bit me, but it is easily defended. After determining that there was just no way it would work I saw that Qf6 also was a mating threat. 4 for 4, it has been an easy week so far.
Apr-20-06  erimiro1: After 26.-Rf8/Qe8 27.Bh6 Ne6 28.Re1! with the threat 29.R:e6 and 30.Qg7#, black has nothing to do.
Apr-20-06  szunzein: <erimio> in case of 26-Rf8/Qe8 27-Bc3 is even better
Apr-20-06  EmperorAtahualpa: The obvious move 26.Bh6 first popped out to me, but I knew it couldn't be 26.Bh6 because it would make the puzzle too simple for a Thursday..so I looked around a bit and then found Black's defense 26...Qd4.

Then after some thinking I spotted 26.Qf6. The good thing about this move is that it threatens Qxf7 as well as Bc3 simultenously. Black cannot prevent both threats at the same time.

Tempo in exchange for material!

This puzzle took me some time though...2 minutes.

Apr-20-06  United33: fiuhhhhh...., got it in 20 minutes, what a nice puzzle !!. Qf6 and it's all over, once again, good puzzle !!
Apr-20-06  trumbull0042: THIRTY MINUTES.
Apr-20-06  NotABanker: Wow, didnt see that comin...

Apr-20-06  latebishop: I thought Black's best defensive try from the diagram was 26...Nd7, attacking the queen and blocking the scope of the b7 bishop. However, after 27.Rxd7 Qxd7 [27...Rxd7 is much the same]28.Bc3 Kf8 29.Re1 it's curtains again for Black.
Apr-20-06  RandomVisitor: Perhaps Black should have played 24...Rd7. Even 25...Qh4 would have avoided disaster.
Apr-20-06  mr j: not even close :(
