White to move.
ANALYSIS [x]
Notes by Eric Schiller.A new move in this rarely explored opening. It caught me offguard and I did not react properly. 9...b4 was surely the correct plan. 9...Rb8 looks dubious because of 10.axb5 axb5 11.d5 +- This retreat is not justified. I simply was afraid of the plan of maneuvering my knight to c4, because I feared that after a capture by the bishop, and recapture with my d-pawn, that the pawn at c4 would then be a serious weakness. 10...Na5 11.Ba2 c5 12.b4 Nc4 13.Bxc4 bxc4 14.bxc5 Bxc5 15.Na3 +0.27 would not be so bad for Black. I was thinking along the lines of my game with Nicholas Yap. that’s what happens when you win a nice game, it carries over and the next time you use the opening you tend to play the same way, whether or not it is appropriate. ⩲ No doubt about it, White has a small advantage here. Nevertheless, Black can whip up some serious counter play. This bishop is destined to stagger drunkenly all over the board, without having any serious effect on White’s position. 13...Nd7 would’ve been a much better plan and in that case White’s advantage would not have been so significant. At this point there really isn’t any other source of counterplay. ± White has a dominating position and Black is suffering under the weight of a large number weaknesses. A powerful move! The sacrifice cannot be accepted. 21...dxc5 ? 22.d6+ Kh8 23.dxe7 Nxe7 24.Bxc5 is a miserable for Black. Of course that this is not the best move, objectively. I made the capture simply because it allowed me to develop a plan to win White’s new weakling at e6, and possibly get some counter play going by advancing central pawns. Other moves would have left me with a miserable position with no real chances to establish any sort of counter play. All I have to do is somehow advance my pawn from d6 to d5 and everything will be fine. Unfortunately my opponent doesn’t allow me to do that..By the way, did I underestimate this move. At the very end of the game you will see the point. Finally! At this point, however, the move doesn’t have much of an impact and allows the knight to take up an even better post at c5. Right square, wrong piece. I could have kept the game close by moving my rook to the square. 32...Rf5 ! 33.Qd4 Bxc5 34.Qxc5 Qxe6 35.bxc6 Nbxc6 ⩲ A serious error which allows me to get back into the game, but both of us mis-analyzed the position and missed the finesse at the end. 33.Bd4 ! Nxd4 34.cxd4 cxb5 35.Bxd5 Bxc5 36.dxc5 Ra7 37.f5 was the correct plan. White’s passed pawns and dominating bishop provide a winning advantage. 33...Nh4 ! was the saving plan. I spotted the move, of course, but simply didn’t date indeed enough into the position. Both players saw the same continuation 34.Bxd5 ! cxd5 35.Qxd5 Ra7 ! 36.Bxh4 but here we both failed to spot Rf5 ! 37.Qe4 Bxc5+ 38.Bf2 Qf6 [ 38...Bxa3 39.Bxa7 ] 39.Bxc5 Rxc5 40.Rxa5 Rxa5 41.e7 Rc8 42.e8=Q+ Rxe8 43.Qxe8+ Kh7 44.Qxb8 Qxc3 with a difficult but not hopeless position for Black. +- The bishop slips onto the long diagonal and finishes off the game.I allow Emory Tate to finish the game with a flashy tactic. Why not? He played very well.I resigned. My opponent at long last got his revenge for my upset victory in the 1997 United States Masters.1-0

Mar-29-05  Accuracy: Revenge is an understatement. Tate outplayed Schiller in every area. Tactically, the game plays like 6 move ideas by white vs. 3 move ideas by black.

Eric Schiller: <accuracy> not quite, See notes to white and black move 33. But he certainly outplayed me from the point where he played a new move. See notes to move 9. Revenge is a powerful motive, and in the hands of a superior player, what chance did I have :-)
Mar-30-05  goldthread: In the annotation to his 23rd. move, Mr. Schiller states<Of course that this is not the best move, objectively.> He then gives his over-the-board rationale for making the move. And then he states: <Other moves would have left me with a miserable position with no real chances to establish any sort of counterplay.> The two statements between brackets are, in my opinion, at least confusing, if not simply contradictory.
May-05-05  Poisonpawns: i would like to hear Tates comments on this game.
May-05-05  Shams: strange errors in the annotation...
black's 15th: "[no other] source of comfort play". is this slang for counterplay?

black's 33rd: "I spotted the move, of course, but simply didn't date indeed enough into the position" does he mean "dig in deep enough"?

Mr Schiller are you using voice-recognition software for these annotations? that might also explain the b-pawn/d-pawn mistake on black's tenth move.

if 9...b4 as recommended white should play 10.a5 even though the pawn may become weak later. yes?

May-05-05  BeautyInChess: Goldthread... I would guess without any more information from the author that he means that he was most comfortable with making the Bxe6 capture even though he thought objectively it wasn't the best move. Most chess players like to play positions that they are comfortable with sometimes at the expense of making the theoretically best move.

Eric Schiller: <goldthread> The statements are not really contradictory. I played a move which was not objectively best, but which gave me some chances to set up some tricks. Tate is not a computer. Against human players, what the machines deem best, from an objective analytical view, may hold no practical chances. In a bad position, you have to seek counterplay. Playing moves that are objectively best, and likely expected, is a poor strategy, INHO.

And the notes here are from a draft that was produced using voice recognition, I had forgotten that the game hadn't been proofed in the database (it hasn't been used in print). Unfortunately, chess programs don't include proofing capabilities, so those have to be done in the word processor later.

chessgames.com: We changed "comfort play" into counterplay; I hope Eric approves of the editorial change.
May-05-05  aw1988: Lol. I think that might work better.
May-24-05  aragorn69: <the notes here are from a draft that was produced using voice recognition, I had forgotten that the game hadn't been proofed in the database>

Looking at Mr Schiller's books, it would seem that this is an excuse he could use a lot...

Oct-14-09  WhenHarryMetSally: I detest the Ne7 move by black i find that it is too cramping plus it doesn't attack those deep central squares in the corridor. It cramps black and gives white some breathing space.
Oct-14-09  MaxxLange: Thanks for the annotations, and for the phrase "comfort play". I'm going to define that as counterplay that is ineffective, but which makes you feel better.

Didn't one of the World Champions like to use this ...Nge7 system sometimes?

Nov-24-19  Jambow: Man this was a game... Tate vs Schiller was one exciting matchup. their games are tactical wonderland.

  perfidious: Only to the uninitiated.
Dec-04-19  Jambow: Lol yap yap... Imagine if you accidentally said something intelligent. Don't forget your meds sunshine.
Dec-04-19  Jambow: Alan Shaw you have no games in the database vs Schiller or Tate I'm sure you would have taking a beating from either of them.

perfidious: <jammer>, doesn't mean I never met either player--this here DB is not the be-all and end-all, or were you taken off the mailing list?
Dec-28-19  Jambow: So I met them both more than once what does that have to do with you poo pooing their game as if you play better than they did? Talked with Emory at length about his son's kick boxing career he was a very proud father. Again since you want to talk about them where are your better games?

Looked over your games cg.com and I'm not seeing any? I think it is more important for you to make negative immature comments than to just be descent and or honest. This is a very interesting game regardless of your failing to take your risperidone on time...

perfidious: <jammin' the jack>, the 'immaturity' here is displayed by your not-so-good self; 'the uninitiated' would be you, rushing in with typically jejune commentary over a game which I really rather doubt you have the ability to comprehend.
Dec-28-19  dumbgai: No fighting in the comments please. Take it outside in the parking lot. ;)
Dec-29-19  Jambow: <Alan> You have an obvious chemical imbalance that I set off for no apparent reason. While I may or may not have the ability to comprehend this game or any other you could have kept quiet and not exposed yourself yet again? You claim I'm on your ignore list then reply to my comments on cg.com no matter where they are at. That displays a level of psychosis does it not?

Now when you respond to a compliment about the tactical wonder of a game by saying only to the uninitiated, you were insulting the players of the game of which both were above your own abilities. That you or I ever met or spoke to them matters zero. You consistently reply to my posts despite boasting that I'm on your ignore list??? Alan please for your own sanity I would ignore me as I obviously make you unhinged. It kills me to be ignored, no really.

While your lexicon is stupendous the marked lack of reading comprehension and inability to form a logical response sort of mutes that aspect does it not? Chat with people like yourself, who are impressed with an endless supply unoriginal sophomoric comments, I'm just not in the fan club Mr. Shaw. I hope you get it all worked out so I can actually be on your ignore list ;0] Yes and if you want to trash me at chess let me know, that would be a lot more interesting than this dialogue. see you in the parking lot sir...
