  chancho: Hair raising stuff...
Jun-03-12  computer chess guy: It appears to me that Black can take the Rook (18. .. gxf6), with a difficult but defensible position. Houdini prefers 18. Bc7!:

click for larger view

If Black tries .. Qxc7, then 19. Nxd5 Qd6 20. Bxc4 bxc4 21. Rde1! . Somewhat better but still losing is .. Qd7, with the variation 19. Nxd5 Qxd5 20. Rfe1! Qxd7 21. Bxc4 bxc4 22. Qxc4.

Feb-27-22  Brenin: My choice was 18 Nxd5 Qxd5 19 Rxf6 gxf6 (19 ... Bxf6 20 Bxf6+ and 21 Qe7+ looks horrible for Black) 20 Bxf6 (threatening 21 Qxe7 mate) Qd7 21 Bxh8, leaving White a P up. Have I missed something stronger?
Feb-27-22  mel gibson: I saw the text ply straight away but Stockfish 14 chooses a different ply:

18. Rxf6

(18. Bc7 (♗e5-c7

score for White +5.56 depth 37.

I forced Stockfish 14 to play the text ply
and it is close to a draw:

18. Rxf6 gxf6

It's the reply of Black 18... Nxe5
that which leads to disaster.

20...Ra7 21. Re1 Rg8 22. Bxe7 Rxg2+ 23. Qxg2 Qxd4+ looks promising

Feb-27-22  agb2002: White is one pawn down.

Black threatens fxe5.

The black queen protects the bishop on d5. This and the threat suggest 18.Bc7:

A) 18... Qxc7 19.Nxd5 Qd6 20.Rfe1 Ra7 21.Bxc4 bxc4 22.Qxc4, with the threat Re6-Rde1, looks very good for White.

B) 18... Qd7 19.Nxe5 Qxd5 20.Rfe1 Qd7 21.Bxc4 bxc4 22.Qxc4 Rc8 23.Rc1, followed by d5-d6, looks very good for White.

I have considered Nxd5, Bxf6, Rxf6 and Qh5+ but Bc7 seems to be much easier and safer.

Feb-27-22  Brenin: <al wazir>: After 18 Nxd5 Qxd5 19 Rxf6 gxf6 20 Bxf6 Ra7, simply 21 Bxh8 (rather than Re1) looks good for White.

Feb-27-22  gofer: Just like <computer chess guy> in 2012 and <agb2002> today, I also chose 18 Bc7. It seems to resolve a lot of the "puzzle questions" like "How do I open the e file without losing tempo?" and poses black with lots of issues to sort out all at the same time.

Stockfish (25 ply) agrees: 18 Bc7 <+4.0>

Stockfish (28 ply) doesn't like Rxf6 anyway as much 18 Rxf6 <+1.0>

So, I am a bit surprised that no one else is posting, when the answer isn't the strongest move by a long shot...

Feb-27-22  AlicesKnight: I looked first at 18.Bc7 and its consequences. I saw some of what <agb2002> and others above have said (but not as much!). I'll take the word of the silicon-keepers on the other outcomes (including 18.Rxf6). Interestingly unclear - White wins but with questions about how ...
Feb-27-22  JohnBoy: I went w 18.Rf6 after toying around w several other options. <mel> Gives SFs survival path, but there is no way I saw 19Bf3, and cant imagine Ziatdinov did either.
Feb-27-22  JohnBoy: It seems my phone is having trouble posting symbols - like apostrophe or ellipsis. Any suggestions?
Feb-27-22  King.Arthur.Brazil: The King (me, of course) saw this line: 18. ♖xf6 gxf6 19. ♗xf6 ♖f8 20. ♕h5+ ♔d7 21. ♕xd5+ ♔c7 22. ♗xc4 ♕xd5 23. ♗xd5 ♖ae8 24. ♗xe7 ♖xe7 25. ♗f3 I guess is not much, so I must be missing something. Maybe, some fishouse will tell after dinner.
Feb-27-22  NBZ: I chose Bc7 too. It seems to lead to a dominating position for White in all lines:

18. Bc7 Qxc7 19. Nxd5 Qd8 20. Rfe1 Ra7 21. Bxc4 bxc4 22. Qxc4 and Black's position is hopeless: a pawn down, bishop pinned to the king, no way to castle etc.

18. Bc7 Qd7 19. Nxd5 Qxd5 20. Rfe1 and either Black gives up a piece, or tries 20. ... Qd7 20. Bxc4 bxc4 21. Qxc4 Rc8 22. Rc1. Black still can't castle, is again down a pawn, and will find it very difficult to extricate his pieces. Admittedly this is not as clear-cut as the line, but I would still 100% play White here.

21...Qg8. White is a ♙ up, but the attack has been blunted.
