plang: Mamedyarov played 3 e3 to avoid the more popular variations. The stem game for this line was game 4 of their 6 game 1984 match at Hilversum where Timman played 9..c5 against Portisch (White won). 14..Ne8 had been played in Chatalbashev-Nagy Balatonlelle 2002 (Black won; game not included in this database); 14..Nb8 was new. Mamedyyarov thought that 19 Nd2 followed by Ne4 would have been an improvement. 20..Nb4 looks like a more active and effective defense. After 22..g5? Black was lost; 22..Bxe4 would have been better. Strong for White would have been 24..Re8 25 Qg3..Nh5 26 Qg4..Qxg5 (very pretty is 26..Nxg5 27 Rxe8+..Qxe8 28 Bh7+!) 27 Rxe6..Qxg4 28 Rxe8+..Kg7 29 Bxg4..Nf6 30 Re3..Nxg4 31 Rg3..Be6 32 d5.
