Jan-18-09 | | patzer of patzers: Most of the moves in this game scare me half to death, but the ending is without a doubt one of the most beautiful finishes I've ever seen in chess. The bishop sacrifice confuses me--could someone provide a continuation or tell me whether 31...Kxg7 32.Qb2+ Kg8 33.Qf6 works out? |

Jan-18-09 | | mosh: What about (39)...Rg7? Does it obviously loose? |

Jan-18-09 | | DwayneMeller: I just want <addictiontochess> to know I'm enjoying hisorher collection<The Greatest Games of All Time 2> ...don't come here that often but I'll be getting back to it soon though...thanks for assembling it. |

Jan-18-09 | | Avarus: 12.g4 This is the kind of french defense position I try to get into! It makes me think that 10..e4 was an error. 14.h4 A move for attack. I would have tried to play it like Petrosian with 14.Nd1!? with the idea to answer 14..b5 15.c5 Bc7 16.a3! closing the queenside and white has all the play. |

 | | Richard Taylor: Yes a great game - I saved it as I play the English (and the Q sac is great) by Bischoff - he is just now playing here in New Zealand at the Queenstown Classic International Tournament. |

 | | Sneaky: Another jaw-dropping game from Cuba involving Jesus Nogueiras. (The other game being J Nogueiras vs M Gongora, 2001.) Funny to see Noguerias on both the winning and the losing side of two different "modern immortals." As far as sacs go, Qxh7+ is a nice sac yes, but not too hard to imagine it winning. I wouldn't go comparing it to ...Qg3!! from S Levitsky vs Marshall, 1912 or anything of that magnitude. Indeed, it's that little bishop on b2 that makes the whole combination click. |

Jan-18-09 | | computer chess guy: In the final position, Rybka 3 suggests Black is not quite lost: 40 .. ♖a7 41. gxh7+ ♔xh7 42. ♖g7+ ♖xg7 43. hxg7 and White has a much superior endgame but Black has the queening square covered so there is no immediate win. But I wouldn't want to defend it against a GM. |

Jan-18-09 | | AxelBoldt: Can black fight on with 40...Ra7 41.gxh7+ Kxh7 42.Rg7+ Rxg7 43.hxg7+ Kg6? |

Jan-18-09 | | xrt999: from the opening development with tension on c4, white castling queenside and placing the rooks on g and h, you can feel white just owning this game right from the get-go; as if he played 1.c4 knowing that his opponent would maintain the tension and go kingside. White's bishops and queen are slicing into black's kingside, and black really has nothing to pin his hopes on except for maybe a run on the a file. I really like 12.h4! Black has no response, as if he didnt see it coming. These brutal pawns and rooks are unstoppable. White maintains the tension waiting for black to offer an entry and here it is 29.e6! Beautiful. |

 | | kevin86: Wo is white-for he has only two connected passed pawns for a queen! BUT-how powerful they are! In short time, they will cost black his queen and probably mate as well. The second will almost certainly score another queen! BTW,after a short review,I consider 30 ♕xh7+!!!! equal to OR BETTER than Frank Marshall's 23...♕xg3!!! in the "gold piece" game. |
|
Jan-20-09 | | patzer of patzers: Thanks for the correction, <Unsound Hero>--I'd never have seen h6! myself... I do find the 40...Ra7! game-lengthener interesting, but, looking at it briefly, I don't see how Black can escape without losing at least a rook. |

Apr-30-09 | | Shams: < According to www.xs4all.nl/~timkr/chess/fant100.htm, 38.Qxh7+ is the tenth greatest move ever played.> what is the obsession of the modern world with ranking things? 100 greatest films, 50 best sports moments...I find it all quite silly. |
