Nov-09-04 | | patzer2: <who> After 16. Qb3 e6! 17. Kxg2 c4! White has a lost game. |
Nov-09-04 | | Marco65: <who> So maybe Black'd better play 16.Qb3+ Kh8 keeping the attack, e.g. 17.Kxg2 c4 18.Q-any Rxf2+ 19.Rxf2 [19.Kh3 Qe6 should be decisive wherever is the white queen] Qxf2+ 20.Kh3 Qxh2+ 21.Kxg4 Qh5+ 22.Kf4 Bh6+ 23.Ke4 Qf5+ 24.Kd4 Qe5# |
Nov-09-04 | | who: ok so 16.Qb3+ doesn't work but simply 16.Nc4 should do the trick leaving white down two pieces for a rook (down a pawn from my previous suggestion) |
Nov-09-04 | | Marco65: <who> At first I agreed with you, then I found 16.Nc4 Qc6 that wins the exchange leaving White one piece down. If 17.Na5 Qf3 18.Qd1 (if 18.Re1 Bh3 and mate to follow) Bxf1. Maybe White can even do better with 16.Nc4 Qc6 17.Na5 Qa8 with the idea of 18...Bh1 continuing the attack |
Nov-09-04 | | Saruman: White could play an agressive gambit with;3.e4 Nxe4 4.Bxb5 a6 5.Bd3 d5 6.Ne5 (hoping for -Nd7?? Nc6 :P) when white is better. |
Nov-09-04 | | Saruman: However 4.-a6 might not be the best move, but still white has good chances. |
Nov-09-04 | | Willem Wallekers: Saruman: I like your idea, although it's no gambit, white doesn't sac anything. I certainly don't like 3. g3 which lets black get away with his impertenence too easy. Quote: "A bad move not refuted becomes a good move". An other option for white is 3. e3 followed by a4 or c4. |
Nov-09-04 | | acirce: He sacs a center pawn for a flank pawn, I think it could count as a gambit. |
Nov-09-04 | | Willem Wallekers: Then almost every move is a gambit. Sac control of one square for control of another one. |
Nov-09-04 | | acirce: "Gambit" isn't used in that sense, I think it has to be about material. |
Nov-10-04 | | Saruman: <He sacs a center pawn for a flank pawn, I think it could count as a gambit.> That is what Im talking about. In the queensgambit white "sacrifices" a pawn with c4, but soon he regains the pawn with Bxc4. |
Dec-17-04 | | ArmyBuddy: It's beautiful |

May-09-16
 | | Penguincw: Morning all, and a good morning it should be, as there's a Monday puzzle. I didn't get this puzzle immediately, but eventually got it. I am surprised this game continues after 18...Nxc2, as white plays 19.Nc4. Personally, I'd play 19...bxc4, which I'm sure is just as fine as 19...Qe6. Black already has a queen, knight and pawn vs. 2 rooks. |
May-09-16 | | lost in space: I love Mondays!
Main line: 16...Rxf2+ 17. Rxf2 Ne3+ 18. Kg1/h1/h3 19. Nxc2 and Black will win due to his material plus But what after 16...Rxf2 17. Kg1
17...Rg2! 18. Kxg2 (18. Kh1 Rxg2+ 19. Kg1 c4+ and mate) 19. Ne3+ and we are back in the main line |
May-09-16
 | | Phony Benoni: There are Monday Puzzle, and there are Pre-Monday Warm-ups. This is neither. <16...Rxf2+> is obvious, of course, with the easy point 17.Rxf2 Ne3+. Jt it gets a bit harder after <17.Kg1 Rg2+ 18.Kh1> (18.Kxg2 Ne3+ again) <18...Rh2+ 19.Kg1 c4+ 20.Rf2 Qxf2#>. *f <17.Kh3>, there's gotta be a king hunt in there somewhere. <17...Rxh2+ 18.Kxg4 Qe6+ 19.Kf3 Qe2+ 20.Kf4 Bh6#>, with some shorter lines and transpositions. I think. Did I sleep through Monday again? That's generally the best way to handle the day. |
May-09-16 | | dfcx: Wow Monday and I can't sac my queen.
16...Rxf2+
A. 17.Rxf2 Ne3+ forks the queen.
B. 17Kg1 Rg2+ 18.Kh1 Rxh2+ 19.Kg1 c4+ and mates soon. C. 17.Kh1 Rxh2+ same as B
D. 17.Kh3 Rxh2+ 18.Kxg4 Qe6+ 19.Rf5 Bh6+ and mate next Not an easy Monday |
May-09-16 | | Razgriz: Was thinking of the fork right away but that ran into problems with ease, so I tried saccing the rook first to clear the e3 squae.. |
May-09-16 | | agb2002: Black has a knight for a rook.
The pawn on f2 prevents Ne3+. Hence, 16... Rxf2+:
A) 17.Rxf2 Ne3+ wins decisive material. For example, 18.Kf3 Nxc2 19.Rb1 Ne1+ 20.Ke3 Bh6+ 21.Ke2 Qe6+ 22.Kd1 Nd3 - + [Q+N+P vs 2R]. B) 17.Kg1 Rg2+
B.1) 18.Kxg2 Ne3+ as in A. For example, 19.Kf3 Nxc2 20.Rb1 Qf6+ 21.Ke2 Qe6+ 22.Kd3 Ne1+ 23.Rxe1 (only move) 23... Qxe1 - + [Q+P vs R]. B.2) 18.Kh1 Rxh2+ 19.Kg1 c4+ 20.Rf2 Qxf2#.
C) 17.Kh1 Rxh2+ transposes to B.2.
D) 17.Kh3 Rxh2+ 18.Kxg4 Ne5+ (18... Qe6+ 19.Rf5) 19.Kf4 (19.Kg5 Bh6#) 19... Bh6+ 20.Kxe5 (20.Ke4 Re2+ 21.Kd5 Qd6#) 20... Re2+ 21.N(Q)e4 (21.Kd5 Qd6#) 21... Qd6#. |
May-09-16 | | AlicesKnight: Yes - got Rxf2 and some aftermath; decisive for Black. |
May-09-16 | | diagonalley: the theme is definitely monday-ish, but the puzzle itself is less clear-cut than one would expect |
May-09-16 | | Boerboel Guy: Well played Richter (of Richter-Rauzer fame). |
May-09-16 | | zb2cr: 16. ... Rxf2+, 17. Rxf2 sets up the fork 17. ... Ne3+. This leaves Black up by Q+N+P vs. 2R. |
May-09-16 | | morfishine: <16...Rxf2+> after 17.Rxf2 Black forks the White Queen 17...Ne3+ |
May-09-16 | | whiteshark: It took me a moment to spot the fork |
May-09-16 | | saturn2: 16..Rxf2+ if White retakes on f2, K and Q get pinned, but after 17 Kh3 Ne3 18 Qb3+ c4 19 Qb1 NxRf1 black is up a piece. |
