An Englishman: Good Evening: Saw this and 53.Qh7+,Kxg5; 54.Rg8. Also good enough?
Nov-09-21  newzild: <An Englishman> That was the first variation I saw as well - but I visualised the position wrong (forgot about the pawn on f6, which shields the king in some lines).
Nov-09-21  raymondhow: Took me forever to choose the first move 52.Rxf6+, also thought about Rh6+ and Qf5+. I call that a tough Tuesday. < Saw this and 53.Qh7+,Kxg5; 54.Rg8. Also good enough? > Apparently not, the K can escape to f4.

al wazir: If I had thought a little I would have played 52. Qf5+ Kf7. (This repeats the position, but I had no way of knowing that just from seeing the puzzle diagram.) Then I would have followed with 53. Rh2, which seems to win a ♖ outright or a ♕ for a ♖. But after 53...Qe4+, all that does is win the ♘, leaving white a ♖ up.

But I thought, maybe there's something better. And sure enough, 52. Rh6+ gxh6 53. Rxf6+ Kxg5 (53...Kh5 is essentially the same) 54. Qg7+ Kh4 55. Rxh6+ Kg3 56. Qc7+ Kf3 57. Rh3+ Ke4 58. Qe7+ wins the Q, which *is* better.

I never did find the game line.

Nov-09-21  nalinw: Yes - tough Tuesday or we are not as good as we think :-) (I expect to do most Thursdays and some Fridays) - I didnt get all the possibilities either
Nov-09-21  agb2002: White has a rook for a knight and a pawn.

Black threatens Qg2# and Qxf1.

White can expose the black king with 52.Rxf6+:

A) 52... gxf6 53.Rg8+ Kh5 54.Qh7#.

B) 52... Kxg4 53.Qxg7#.

Nov-09-21  paavoh: Somehow this was easier to see than yesterday's puzzle: 52. Rxf6+ gxf6 53. Rg8+ Kh5 and 54.Qh7#. At least to me. Go figure...
Nov-09-21  mel gibson: Very easy - more a Monday puzzle.
Nov-09-21  Schwartz: I bet it is Rx R#
Nov-09-21  TheaN: <52.Rxf6+ gxf6 (Kxg5 53.Qf5#) 53.Rg8+ Kh5 54.Qh7#> the final sequence is somewhat rare. What Englishman posted is usually more common in these positions:

<An Englishman: Good Evening: Saw this and 53.Qh7+,Kxg5; 54.Rg8. Also good enough?>

...but no, it's not. 54....Kf4 55.Qc7+ Kf3 56.Qxc6+ Qe4 -+ as White has no defense against the discovered check by the king except for QxQ, and that's lost.

Nov-09-21  Lambda: The actual combination is perfectly simple and easily Tuesday level. But there are lots of less accurate possibilities to be distracted by. So this one very much depends on whether you're lucky enough to try the right thing first.

gawain: The mate is pretty, as the black rook neatly occupies his king's escape square g4.
Nov-10-21  Steve Holloway: All I saw was Qh7+ Kxg5 3.Qg7+ Kf5 4.Qd7+ Qe6 5.Qh7+ Kf4 etc
