Jul-25-06  AniamL: Does white have something better here than 8...gxf6 9.♕xd8+ ♔xd8 10.♗xf6+ ♔e7 11. ♗xh8 (with O-O to follow)? The position is resignable, I'm just wondering if there's a forced mate (or forced loss of more material) somewhere.

perfidious: The same combinative idea which White erroneously sought in this famous game: Fine vs M Yudovich Sr., 1937; here, White's ability to play c3 makes all the difference.

This should make a good POTD.

  GrahamClayton: 8....♕xd1+ 9. ♖xd1 gxf6 10. ♗xf6 with the double threat of 11. ♖d8# and 11. ♗xh8.

fredthebear: In the final position, 8...QxQd1+ is not a legal move as Black must get out of check.

After 8...Ke7 9.Ng8++ gains the Black queen and more.

<AnimalL> post looks accurate after 8...gxNf6 etc. I see nothing better than the bishop+ and fork of the cornered rook.
