Oct-20-04  fasting: Nice short game, with lots of "swing"!!

But talking of less good moves, I do think that 13.Qe1? is a huge blunder, which makes it possible for mr. Lee to finish smoothly.

13.Nxe4! is without doubt the solution, it avoids the mate, and captures blacks white bishop

Lee finish off sweet. Even more efficient and beautiful would have been if he sacrificed his queen and went for the quick forced mate after whites terrible 13.Qe1?? - 13...Qxg3 14.hxg,Bf3 - and mate in next move!

Jul-16-07  superzondo: yes 13...Qxg3 as in McMurray-Kussman 1937
Jul-16-07  dovif: why not 5 Nxf7
Dec-30-07  archiespringer: Correction: Dlugy's opponent was named William Lee. Game occured at a Friday night Quad at the Jamaica CC. It also appeared in Chess Life June 1980. This was Maxim's first tournament loss in the U.S. and he was not happy! He stormed out of the club spouting profanities in Russian. I was there. P.S. 13. Nxe4 seems correct.
Dec-30-07  Strongest Force: Archiesringer, i also met Max around this time (i think he was 11) and he talked me into playing at the Queens club (Max didn't show up). At another time, maybe a year later at the same club, me and Max went-out for lunch in-between rounds; it was raining hard and Max grabbed my hat off of my head and proceeded to run very fast back to the club in the hope that i would get very wet. :)

  GrahamClayton: <dovif>why not 5 ♘xf7

<dovif>
I think that Dlugy didn't want the complications that come after 5. ♘xf7 ♗xf2+ 6. ♔f1 ♕e7 7. ♘xh8 d5 8. exd5 ♘d4.

Sep-29-21  Granny O Doul: By the time this game appeared in Chess Life (in Evans's "Reader's Showcase"), Dlugy was a master, which made the winner's notes pretty funny (stuff like "I knew my opponent was an excellent positional player, so I thought I'd see how handles tactics").

  FSR: This is what the Traxler player dreams of.

  fredthebear: Ah yes, the old Bishop Sac line without the Bishop Sacrifice. Works like a charm!

  FSR: Someone who has Chess Life, June 1980 at hand should look for this game. If what <archiespringer> says is correct, chessgames has the winner's name wrong.
