May-19-04  Whitehat1963: What's the finish?

  tpstar: <Whitehat1963> 27. Rxf7 Re8 28. Qf3! gets Queens off into a won endgame (28 ... Qd7 29. Qf6+!).
May-21-04  Cyphelium: <tpstar> Your suggestion looks safe and strong to me. However, it might also be possible to play for mate after 27. Rxf7 Re8 with 28. Rxe7! Rxe7 29. Qf2. Then 29.- Qd8 (what else?) 30. Qf6+ Kg8 31. Nxe6 is just lost (31. - Qb6+ 32. Kh1 Bxg2+ 33. Kxg2 Qc6+ 34. Rf3 etc.).

  tpstar: <Cyphelium> Great idea, especially since Black's dark squares are so weak. What about 27. Rxf7 Re8 28. Rxe7 Rxe7 29. Qf2 Rg7 leaving the Bb7/Qd5 battery intact? After 30. Qf8+ Rg8 31. Qf6+ Rg7 White doesn't have time for 32. Nxe6/Qxe6 due to 32 ... Qxg2++, and if 32. Rf2 Bc8 holds for now, and there's still that hanging Pc3. Do you see a clearer path?
May-24-04  Cyphelium: <tpstar> I think that your variation looks like the refutation of 27. Rxf7 Re8 28. Rxe7. The idea has to be modified then: 27. Rxf7 Re8 and now 28. Qf2 instead threatens 29. Rxe7 and the bishop cannot move from the d8-h4 diagonal. If 28.- Qd7 then 29. Qe3 (say hello to h6 and h3) might be problematic. What do you think?

  tpstar: After 27. Rxf7 Re8 28. Qf2 I like 28 ... Bh4! boinking the Queen (29. Qxh4 Qxg2++; 29. g3 Qh1++). If now 29. Rf8+ Kg7 (29 ... Rxf8? 30. Qxf8++) 30. Qf7+ Kh6 31. Qf4+ Bg5 (31 ... g5?! 32. Qf6+ Kh5 33. Qf3+ Qxf3 34. R1xf3! Rxf8 34. Rxf8 keeps the exchange; 34 ... Bxf3?? 35. Rxe8 Be4 36. g3) and White has no checks for the moment. Or else 29. Rxh7+!? Kxh7 30. Qxh4+ Kg8 with no more checks, yet 31. Qg5 is strong. Your move!
May-25-04  Cyphelium: After (27. Rxf7 Re8 28. Qf2) 28.- Bh4 29. Rxh7 Kxh7 30. Qxh4+ Kg8 31. Qg5, isn't white winning? The only move that doesn't lose immediatly seems to be 31.- Qe4 but 32. h4 looks good then. White wants to chase away the queen from the defence of the g6-pawn, for example 32.- bxc3?! 33. Rf4 Qe1+ 34. Kh2 and white wins. 32.- Kg7 doesn't make much of a difference and 32.- Rf8 runs into 33. Rxf8+ Kxf8 34. Nxe6+ and both 34.- Ke8 and 34.- Kg8 will lead to black losing the queen to a knight fork.
May-16-10  thickhead: 25.Kg1 looks like a mysterious move but it is a preparation for capture at f7.As it is 25.Rxf7 is followed by 25...Qxg2+ 26.Qxg2 Bxg2+ 27.Kxg2 and black captures R at f7. now with king at g1 Bxg2 can be ignored as it is not check and after capturing R at f8 B at g2 can be captured. However what happens now after 27.Rxf7 Rxf7 28.Rxf7. I thought black may have some counterplay with 28... Bc5.There is no time for bxc3 nad black is forced to 29.... Qxe5. white plays 30.Rxb7 bxc3 31.Rd7 guards everything.Black is in zwugszwang. If 31... h6 32.Kg1 and black cannot stop qf7.
May-18-10  thickhead: I am sorry. In my comment above in the last line it should be 32.Kf1 as king is already on g1.
