I agree. There is no need for 13.a5. Why would white want to let go of the threat on the b5 pawn? In exchange for what... a tiny bit of useless space? As <jerseybob> said, 13.a5 only created a long term weakness for white.

It looks like white played the opening poorly. Why 10.e4, for example? 10.axb5 looks fine and more natural, and he still has two minor pieces in their initial squares.

Najdorf punishes all this lighthearted play with, frankly, natural moves. White gets tangled up in its own territory. Four of his five moves in the 25-29 move sequence are backwards!

In the final position, Guimard resigns without waiting for 41...b3, winning material.
