 | | Honza Cervenka: Miraculous Houdini-like escape from white's part. White's position looked already absolutely hopeless but miles managed to find nice saving trick. Still I don't believe that black was not won in this game. 36...Re8 looks like an easy win for black. |
Mar-05-07 | | ianD: Thanks Honza! You found another interesting game. Great save by Miles. I have added to my collection of sneaky Bishop moves. |

 | | Honza Cervenka: 30...Qxd6 seems to be quite crushing. 31.Rxd6 Rb1+ is out of any consideration and 31.exd6 Bxc3 looks grim for white too. |

 | | Benzol: <Honza> <ianD> The tournament booklet says 36...h6 wins easily. |

 | | al wazir: What's wrong with 22. Rxa4 ? That removes the threat of promotion, and White seems to come out ahead in material in all lines. |
Dec-11-18 | | Honey Blend: I love the idea of 34. ... f3!. What might even be harder to spot is 35. gxf3 ♕f5!! and White looks lost. click for larger viewNow the e pawn is attacked twice, the h pawn is hanging, and at the same time 36. ♕xa2 doesn't help because of the fork 36. ... ♖xd1+ 37. ♖xd1 ♕xf3+ +- |

Dec-11-18 | | bahduggi: Best pun in a coupla years! I do admit that's not saying much... |
Dec-11-18 | | Ironmanth: Great game by the players! Thanks, chessgames. |
Dec-11-18 | | Vermit: 22.Rxa4 looks at first glance to run into Nc5 with the dual threat of Ne4 |
Dec-11-18 | | GlennOliver: Fascinating game, despite all of the missed opportunities; here's another - 40. ... Rh1
- and Black wins simply after the pawn then promotes with check. Excellent pun also. |
Dec-11-18 | | Gouvaneur: @GlennOliver: Does it really win? 40...Rh1+ 41.Kxh1 a1D+ 42.Kh2 and Black still has to deal with the mate threat on f8. 42...Qg7 43.Rxf8+ would transpose to the game continuation - with Black having two rather useless queens!
The alternative would probably be to play 42...Qxg2+ 43.Kxg2, but that at best is enough for perpetual. |
Dec-11-18 | | goodevans: <GlennOliver: Fascinating game, despite all of the missed opportunities; here's another - 40. ... Rh1> Lot's of missed opportunities, yes, but 40...Rh1+ wasn't one of them. After <40...Rh1+ 41.Kxh1 a1=Q+ 42.Kh2> black still can't avoid the same drawing trick as happened in the game. |

Dec-11-18 | | thegoodanarchist: They played <Phillips> and drew. |

 | | MSteen: This has got to be one of the BEST game-name puns I've seen on here! Kudos to the originator!! |
Dec-11-18 | | Howard: Remind me to check the Informant tonight when I get home, assuming that this game is included. |
Dec-11-18 | | Saniyat24: now that is a proper pun...! |
Dec-11-18 | | Saniyat24: ...and 1984 is the year I was born...I know totally irrelevant :D |

Dec-11-18 | | catlover: Congratulations to <thegoldenband> for coming up with an excellent pun. |

 | | al wazir: <Vermit: 22.Rxa4 looks at first glance to run into Nc5 with the dual threat of Ne4> 22. Rxa4 Nc5 23. Ba5, and now if 23...Rxg3 or 23...Bxe5 then 24. Bxc7. But after 23...Qb8 white has to lose the ♖ or give up his ♕ for a ♖. Best for white is probably 23. Rb4 Ne4 24. Rxb3 Nxg3 25. hxg3, Bxg5 with ♖+♗ vs. ♕. So I guess you're right. It looks pretty precarious. |

 | | Domdaniel: A very beautiful game. Miles perhaps got the result that he deserved ... it would have been a real tragedy to lose the game after such a fine defence. |

 | | Domdaniel: The A Woods
are lovely ... |
Dec-11-18 | | thegoldenband: Thanks for the compliments on my pun! I originally submitted it over 4 years ago, so it was kind of a trip to see it pop up today. |

Dec-11-18 | | Boomie: <ajk68> You need to indicate which engine was used. Re8 and Kh8 are not exactly human moves, eh? Not finding them over the board is understandable. |
Dec-11-18 | | Albion 1959: Miles had a knack of saving lost causes, another example that comes to minds was against Short in 1980, where was four pawns down to Short and managed to salvage the draw ! |
