Mar-12-21  iron john: is this win for black?
Mar-12-21  sudoplatov: This seems like a perpetual check. White just keeps checking on the f and g files. Black's King cannot go to e7 as there is a Mate-In-5. Going to the h-File seems to lose; White gets the Rook to the h-File with Check and promotes. White's Rook then covers Black's putative mating square, a1.
Oct-06-21  Jose Ortiz Elias: This a perpetual check position. The white king cannot escape of the rook's checks. If 49. Rf8+, Ke7??, then: 50. Rf7+, Kd6; 51. c8N+, Kc5; 52. Rc7+, Kb5; 53. Bc4+, Ka4; 54. Nb6#.

fredthebear: In the final position shown, Black is threatening checkmate. Thus, 49.c8=Q?? Rh1#.

So White must maintain a series of checks to avoid checkmate. As <J.O.E.> points out above, the Black king dare not make a run for it to the queenside, else White's underpromotion w/check <51.c8N+> eventually results in checkmate of the Black king.

Thus, the Black king must allow itself to be perpetually checked instead of checkmated by shuffling repeatedly between Kf6 and Kg7. (The safest place for the Black king that is reachable is Kf6 and Kg7.) White must maintain the perpetual check to avoid defeat by Rh1#, and does not have time to enjoy the fruits of promotion.

Note that 50...Kh7?? 51.Rh8+ would lose for Black whether the king accepts or declines the rook sacrifice, but it'll take awhile.
