Apr-23-05  THE pawn: Hey for a saturday puzzle, that was quite easy. At first I thought about the knight on f3, but then I saw the rook, so I immediately tried to find a way of taking the queen out of the way, 33.Qb2 was the solution. 34 Qf4 Rxg2+ 35 Kh1 Rf2 equals to a mate.
Apr-23-05  JohnBoy: I don't think 33...Nf3+ is a mistake. After 34.gf3 Qb2 again seems to win. The only thing I think I miss is picking up the b pawn.
Apr-23-05  Everett: <JohnBoy> I saw the same moves. After 35.Qxc2 Qxc2+ 36.K any Qxa4, white can protect his bishop with Bc6 and try to usher the b-pawn down. White will have to avoid Q-forks if he wants to keep his rook...
Apr-23-05  dasp3edd3m0n: Nf3+ is a mistake..gxf3 Rxd2+ Rxd2 and its two rooks and a bishop versus a queen.
Apr-23-05  radu stancu: <dasp3edd3m0n> After 33...Nf3+ 34. gxf3, John Boy suggested 34...Qb2, not Rxd2+. And while it's not as good as the move that was actually played because it doesn't pick the b-pawn, it's still a good continuation.
Apr-23-05  kevin86: Reflexes are important to anatomy, but not to chessplayers. It is often the unusual move that garners a victory, usually the kind of move the expert can find over the board.

The opening and following minority attack show how unusual play can favor the better player.

Apr-23-05  Recklessmove: I have not been doing so well at these, and when I chose the right play here, I said, naw, that's too easy. Well, I guess someone thought it was tough or it wouldn't be the Sat puzzle, right?
Apr-23-05  awfulhangover: I saw it! First I thought about Nf3+, but there were nothing. After 5 minutes I was to give up, but then Caissa shouted Qb2!!. This week have been awesome, seen it all and often in seconds. I feel like a GM. But next week I'm probably blind again :-( !
Apr-23-05  patzer2: Although GM Keene's 33...Qb2!! is the strongest and best move, leading to a decisive double attack, he had two winning alternatives. He could also have won with John Boy's 33...Nf3+! 34. gxf3 Qb2 or with 33...Qb3! 34.Ra3 Nf3+ 35.Kh1 Qb1+ 36.Qd1 Rc1 .
Apr-23-05  dasp3edd3m0n: My apologies, Johnboys line was correct.

Richard Taylor: This was my line - I saw Qb2 the started thiking of another move 33...Nf3+ 34. fe3 Qb2 35. Kg3 (or checks pick up the other rook) R:d2 36. Rd2 Qd2 37. Bc6 f5 (there are a few replies here )but eg 38. gf (black threatens mate in 2) gf 39. b5 ..but I went wrong from there as now I see the R is guarding f4) so looking now there is 39...Kf6 40. b2..anyway I thought I had found a win by Balck withthe advance of his K-side pawns and a mate before white Queens ...or some checks to pick up the R on a4..so ididnt pursue Qb2 which was I thought an easy win at first -oh well there you go...cant win them all!!

This was deceptively good game Ray Keene!

  Richard Taylor: There is this if White cooperates 33...Nf3+ 34. fe3 Qb2 35. Kg3 Rd2 36.Rd2 Qd2 37.Bc5 g5 38. b5 Kg6 39. b6 h5 40. gh Kh 41. b7 f5 42. b8=Q f4+ 43. Rf4 gf4 mate !!

But white has a few other options lol

And Keene's sequence is more elegant I feel.

Jun-14-05  aw1988: For the love of god, stop sniping. Nearly 90% of the comments I see from you are negative towards other users at the slightest provocation. Can't you take a LITTLE humor? For that matter, do you know what humor is?
Jun-14-05  nikolaas: It's some kind of liquid isn't it? (Okay to understand this you'd have to know some etymology)

Humor:

One of the four fluids of the body, blood, phlegm, choler, and black bile, whose relative proportions were thought in ancient and medieval physiology to determine a person's disposition and general health.
