May-01-19  Messiah: 1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 dxe4 4. Nxe4 Bf5 5. Ng3 Bg6 6. h4 h6 7. Nf3 Nd7 8. h5 Bh7 9. Bd3 Bxd3 10. Qxd3 Ngf6 11. Bd2 e6 12. Qe2 Be7 13. O-O-O O-O 14. Rhe1 a5 15. Nf5?!

<Deviating from Huebner vs Larsen, 1980 15. Kb1, where Hübner was tortured for a long time.>

15...Bb4!?

<I fail to see what was wrong with 15...exf5 16. Qxe7 Ne4 17. Qxd8 Rfxd8 18. Re2 Ndf6=, however, 15...Bb4 also holds equality.>

16. Nxh6+ gxh6 17. c3 Re8!?

<Sacrificing the bishop to open wide the a-file, hoping for back rank mates - if White does not capture, then the bishop will return to f8, and Black's position is better to play.>

18. cxb4 axb4 19. Ne5 Rxa2 20. Bxh6 b3 21. Nxd7?

<This knight offer should not have been accepted. White has three ideas that make sense:>

<The 21. Rd3 Ra1+ 22. Kd2 Qa5+ 23. Rc3 Ra2 24. Qf3 Rxb2+ 25. Kd3 Qb5+ 26. Rc4 Nc5+! <(26...Nb6?? 27. Qg3+ with checkmate)> 27. dxc5 Rd8+ 28. Ke3 Nd5+ 29. Kd4 Nc3+ 30. Ke3 Nd5+ 31. Kd4 Nf6+ 32. Ke3 draw must be calculated very precisely.>

<21. Qe3 Nxe5 22. Qg5+?! <(better is 22. Qxe5 <(22. dxe5?? Ra1#)> Kh7 23. Bg5 Ng4 24. Bxd8 Nxe5, and both captures lead to a complicated equality)> Ng6! 23. hxg6 Ra1+ 24. Kd2 Rxd1+, and the Black queen arrives on d4 with a check.>

<21. Nc4?! tries to slow down the operations on the queenside, to which Black can reply with some extreme variations:>

<<21...Qa8 22. Rd3 Kh7 (slows down kingside ideas) 23. Bg5 Ra1+ 24. Kd2 Nb6! 25. Rc3! Nxc4+ 26. Qxc4 Rxe1 27. Bxf6! Qa1 28. Qd3+ Kh6 29. Qf3! Rg8 and Black is objectively a little bit better, the wild play may go on.>>

<<21...Ra1+ 22. Kd2 Ra4 23. Qf3 Kh7 24. Bf4! Nd5 25. Bg3 f5 26. Qxb3 Rb4 27. Qc2 Qg5+ (why not?) 28. Ke2 N7f6 29. Kf1 Qxh5 30. Nd6 guarantees zero advantage for Black.>>

<<21...Nb6 22. Qd3 (threatens Qg3) <(22. Kb1 Nxc4 23. Qxc4 Qa5 24. Qxb3 Ra1+ 25. Kd2 with complicated play)> Ra1+ <(or 22...Ng4 immediately, harassing the f2 pawn)> 23. Kd2 Rxd1+ 24. Kxd1 Ng4 25. Be3 Nd5 26. Qxb3 Qh4 seems to cement Black's advantage, although tactics are ever-present on both sides.>>

<<21...Nc5?! and the engine thinks 22. Qe5 Kh7 23. Bg5 Nfe4 24. Rxe4 Qxg5+! 25. Rf4 Qxe5 26. Nxe5 f5 27. dxc5 Ra1+ 28. Kd2 Rd8+ 29. Nd3 Rxd3+ 30. Kxd3 Rxd1+ 31. Kc3 Rc1+ 32. Kxb3 Rxc5 is the way to equality.>>

<<21...Qe7 (with devilish ideas of a later Qa3) 22. Qd3 Ng4 23. Qg3 Nf6 24. Nd6 Rd8 <(24...Rea8? 25.f3 and the knight falls.)> 25. Bf4 c5 26. dxc5 Qc7 27. Qxb3 Qxc5+ 28. Qc4 Qxf2 29. Re2 and I think Black has the pull.>>

<<21...Kh7 22. Bg5 Rg8 23. f4 b5 24. Qd3+ Kg7 25. Ne5 Nxe5 26. fxe5 Qa5 27. Bxf6+ Kf8 28. Qc3 Qxc3+ 29. bxc3 Rgxg2 30. Kb1 leads nowhere.>>

<<21...Ra4 22. Na3 Qa5 23. Rd3 Ra8 24. Rg3+ Kh7 25. Bd2 Qf5 26. Rxb3 Rxd4 27. Rf3 Qxh5 28. Rh3 Rh4 29. Qd3+ Kg7 30. Reh1 Rxh3 31. Rxh3 Qc5+ 32. Bc3 and it is highly difficult to find an advantage for Black.>>

[to be continued...]

May-01-19  Messiah: [...continued]

21...Qa5!

<Of course! This second knight sacrifice is very sound, anything else enables the activation of the White queen - given that the Black king's position is at least shaky, an immediate action is mandatory.>

22. Nxf6+

<Rejection doesn't work, every other moves will lead to the certain loss: 22. Qd3 Ra1+ 23. Qb1 Rxb1+ 24. Kxb1 Qf5+ <(no piece can defend on e4!)> 25.Re4 Qxe4+ 26. Rd3 Qxd3+ 27. Kc1 Qc2#>

22...Kh8 23. Qd3??

<23. Bg7+! Kxg7 24. Nxe8+ Kf8 25. Qd3 Ra1+ 26. Qb1, and although it is still not good for White, no immediate mating attacks are on the board.>

23...Ra1+ 24.Qb1 Ra8?

<After this move a forced sequence comes: although Black is still better, 24...Rxb1+ 25. Kxb1 Ra8 26. Kc1 Qb4 was the correct path towards the checkmate.>

25. Qxa1 Qxa1+ 26. Kd2 Qxb2+ 27. Ke3 Qc3+ 28. Kf4 b2 29. Ne4

<29. Re3? Qc2, and either the knight or the d1 rook will fall, or the b2 pawn reaches the back rank.>

29...Qc2?

<29...Qxe1 30. Rxe1 Ra1 31. Re3 b1=Q, and White needs three more moves for the checkmate, that is too slow with a king not behind the pawn shelter.>

30. Nd2??

<Panic. Something like the unnatural-looking 30. Ke5 Qa4 <(30...Ra5+? 31. Kf6 Rf5+ 32. Ke7 leads nowhere, as once the knight jumps to f6, defending f7 is impossible, e.g. 32...Qa4 33. Nf6, and how do you prevent White from taking on f7?)> 31. Bd2 <(31. Bg5? Qa5+ with an eventual Qc7, and the passed pawns will decide, also Black threatens with ugly checks using Ra3)> Qa3 <(31...Rf8?! 32. Bg5! Qa5+ 33. Kf4 f6 34. Bxf6+ Rxf6+ 35. Nxf6 Qf5+ 36. Ke3 Qxf6 with equality)> 32. Rb1 <(from this point I omit the sub-variations, calculate yourself if you wish)> Qf8 33. h6?! f5 34. Ng5 Rd8 35. Rxb2 Qd6+ 36. Kf6 e5+!? 37. Kxf5 Rf8+ 38. Kg4 Qxd4+ 39. Re4 Qxb2 is suggested by the digital monster after about 10 hours of calculation, with a certain pull for Black. The lines are pretty much impossible to calculate, unless you are Shirov.>

30...Qf5+ 31. Kg3 Rg8+ 32. Kh2 Qxh5+??

<32...Qxf2 was mate in 4, probably Black was in a serious time trouble. The position is still winning.>

33. Kg1 Qxh6

<White resigned, because the queen heads to g5-b5 <(34. Nf3 Qh3 decides)>, the rook is on way to a8, and it is over.>

May-01-19  Messiah: This is a calculations roller coaster, I recommend analysing it by using a real board, playing through every wild ideas on your own.
