  offramp: After 23...e4 Karpov realised he was losing and played the rest of his moves more or less instantly.

Feb-03-12  LawrenceBernstein: Legend, yes, but Speelman had Tolik by the short hairs and let him escape.

One moment was instead of ...40 Qc6, he could have gone for the jugular with ...40 Qd1.

Only check is 41 Qe7, (if 41. Qd7+ Ka6 and the checks are finito.)

And on 41. Qe7 Ka6 42. Qa3+ Kb7 43. Qe7+ runs into Rc7! when the black king is sheltered and both the Queen and Knight are under attack, while the threat of Rg7 is decisive.

Oct-23-16  Howard: Karpov also reportedly had a lost game against Timman in this same event, but like in this game, Karpov salvaged a draw.

That was only Kasparov's "privilege" at the eighties... and after the first thirty games of the 1984 WCC match...
