I was expecting Kortschnoi to swap off one of those evil-looking bishops. Instead he played the very good move 18...Qd5. If white now wanted to keep his evil-looking bishop pair then he would have to play something like 19.Bb1 which would obviously give him development problems. So Karpov decided to totally equalize the position.
